Steem Cartoon : Creative Industry in the Blockchain?

in #steem-cartoon6 years ago

I have been in this industry from the moment I started working and as depressing as it sounds, it is really a tough market. Let me show you how tough the market is...

How do you rate this animation?

This is the quality of the animation industry in our country. I would say the work is almost on par with industrial standards but with only a small fraction of the budget. Then I wonder, why are we not able to make our animation industry bloom.

I list the problem to be as follows:

If we create a local scene, it does not appeal to the international market. If we create a different culture, we will receive brickbats saying that we have very surface understanding of the different culture.

eg. Malaysians creating scenes and animation of the life of Eskimos in the North Pole

While the animation can be top notch, what we really lack is the script. Animators do forget that creating an appeal to the work is very much dependent on a good script and proper voice talent.

Insufficient financing. This is the most dire part of animation industry. There definitely cannot be moving of mountains if there is no manpower to move even an anthill.

My Rant

I am not ashamed to say that my company, an animation studio is probably alive and still creating animation because of government grants. We are not able to survive merely base on purchase of licenses and buy up from television stations.

It is difficult to maintain a good team of animators, script writers, recording studio and other supporting personnel if we lack the funds.

I am lucky to have a team that stood by me through thick and thin. I also dare to say that these individuals have experienced the bitter with me going through months without their pay but held on with the hope that we will see better days ahead.

I am considered a seasoned player in this industry in Malaysia, and if I face such an insurmountable task, imagine what new animators would face. I can fully understand why so many studios have come to set up their support system in Malaysia because they have the work and the contract to pay salaries. These animators produce work which are no lesser in quality to their western counterpart in fact much cheaper.

Whilst I am struggling with a perennial problem plaguing this industry I am looking at how the blockchain can help animators like myself. Cryptokitties seem like a good idea. I really don't understand how digital cats have such an appeal to the extent that they costs more than the real ones.

If the kitty above sells for $115,000 I think we can all resign from this industry and do digital cat breeding.

Creating New Intellectual Properties

I am thinking how the blockchain can help me and I am going along the lines of having super warriors that represent each crytocurrency. Just like how Captain Planet captured the hearts of many youngsters...well, if you don't belong to my age group maybe this will help you understand.

Source

If a group of teenager can summon a super human being and with a good moral embedded in the theme, I think there is some marketability in it.

I am open to ideas, tell me how blockchain can help the creative industry.

Here is a basic idea that I am toying with....5 ninja warriors (baby animals) and they all represent a type of crypto and the benefit that the crypto brings. For instance a baby whale dressed in a ninja suit but with a stamp of 'Steem' on its tummy.

Something like the above.

If all else fails, perhaps I will start getting licenses to sell comics online for a nominal fee.

i feel your pain bro . i may not know the industry at all , however from talks with my friends in this sector is mainly to just take on large outsourced projects for sustainability. There are so many creative people in Malaysia which just needs more direct exposure to the industry which is sadly lacking at this point of time. You could be the one who champions this and put Malaysian's creativity recognised globally ! cheers .....

Thanks bro!!..yup..outsourced projects from outside can make the difference.. and we are still improving our qualities and networking to achieve that target..hope for brighter days ahead..thanks again for visiting and your support @bitrocker2020

Did you actually want people to rate the animation or was it a rhetorical question? XD I think it could have been smoother but I don't know when along the pipeline this is. I would totally watch it anyway, looks like fun XP Is there more?

I guess blockchain tech could help with any ownership/copyright issues if you are documenting your process here or some other platform like it. I'm not sure how much of a problem that one is for you personally but I have known other people that have run into trouble with people stealing their works and pretending it's theirs, and also had to arbitrate a few of those cases. And specifically in spaces like this, well wouldn't it be cool to be able to fund your entire studio from upvotes? :)

Now I'm trying to imagine a ninja whale and it's seriously not working for me (mostly because I'm laughing too hard), but I want you to draw it anyway please XD

goatsig

@ryivhnn haha..most likely a rhetorical question ..just to feed some examples on how malaysian progress in animation nowadays(which is actually very positives..in terms of qualities..the video itself is from 2012)

Ninja whales..haha..that a tough one.. but can try to create some sort of visuals i think..u can still try to imagine or draw it(once u had enough laughing that is haha)..thanks again for the support!!

It is very interesting to learn about the concerns you have that is holding back animators from succeeding, when they have so much talent and experience, and yet the direction is misguided for the wrong audience.

My favorite cartoons were always animated by foreign artists, and then later voiced by American and British voice actors, reading from a script written by a seasoned screenwriter, and broadcast for American audiences, and then re-voiced for a world-wide audience. Thundercats, Voltron, He-Man, The Hobbit, DuckTales.

We already have some fun superhero icons on the blockchain, and there is always room for more. I would love to see some actual branding occur, such as DC and Marvel heroes who exist in different universes.

I would do a lot more with my creative writing fantasy stories, but I tend to have many unfinished ideas for grand/epic storylines that never get published because there is nobody to motivate me that wants to listen to my ideas and give me some direction and feedback to improve. I think it would be a lot of fun to write for artists who wanted to make comic strips or animated characters into a story for a larger audience.

#teammalaysia always does great work here on steemit from what I can see. Keep it up.

wow!!..you are most welcome to collaborate any of your ideas @cretivetruth ..and more superheroes brand in the blockchain is a nice tought!!..and i do love doing fantasy stories(which we lack writers before)

you're always support us in #steem-cartoon and #teammalaysia ..and a very big thanks for that..cheers!!
