I often feel like Hunter S. Thompson. Not as if I'm a prolific, dream-state writer. But as if I spend my whole day getting out of my own way. To finally get down to work at midnight.
I am struck by an inexplicable feeling of familiarity when I read the biographer E. Jean Carroll's now famous recount of the daily routine of what Hunter Thompson would imbibe. Something like: Chivas, cocaine, cocaine, more Chivas, cocaine, cigarettes, for an 8 or 9 hour stretch.
Certainly not that the familiarity of running that gauntlet of substances few humans could expect to survive. Familiarity of being constantly adjacent to what I'm trying to accomplish. Only catching up with it at some wee hour of the morning. A dog chasing a car until it runs out of gas. Always in preparation mode.
A cat always ready to pounce, but too damn picky to choose its prey.
