Max Verstappen: Ferrari Is Cheating!

in #sportstalk5 years ago (edited)

This year's Formula 1 season is almost over: only Brazil and Abu Dhabi are left. I've been enjoying this year a lot, as I'm a fan of Lewis Hamilton since his debut in the sport in 2007, and I'm growing more fond of young Dutch driver, and Formula 1 prodigy, Max Verstappen as I see him maturing (and getting better!) as he gets more experienced.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton; this could become one of Formula 1's great rivalries, like Ayrton Senna versus Alain Prost or Michael Schumacher versus Mika Häkkinen, if Lewis stays in the sport long enough and / or Verstappen grows quickly enough. And if that doesn't work out, we may have some great battles ahead of us between Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. Hamilton just won his sixth world title, and is only one removed from Shumacher's all-time record of seven world championships, but Lewis can rightly be called one of the all-time greats already. From his first appearance in 2007, driving for McLaren Mercedes against a two time world champion, Fernando Alonso, anyone with even a passing interest in the sport could recognize the talent, and we knew he'd be good. But THIS good? Well, I didn't see that coming.

With Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc we now have two new exceptional talents, both of whom will become world champion sometime in the future I suspect, given the right circumstances and the right car: all champions have had one of the best, if not the best car on the grid. It's a funny sport, a capitalist sport I should say, seeing how it got started. Basically, and this is the ultra short version, it was a couple of very rich men who started among themselves a competition to decide who could design and build the fastest car, and was daring enough to drive that car to its absolute limits. That's why there's, till this day, such big differences in the performance of the cars. But still, the truly greats are greats for a reason: they systemically beat their team mates, who drive the same hardware, and the consequently get the most performance out of the hardware they're given. And then there's the mind-games and the politics off-track... It's a peculiar sport indeed, but a highly entertaining one to watch.

Verstappen isn't yet completely up to snuff where the off-track politics are concerned, given his recent remarks about Ferrari's sudden loss of performance during the latest race-weekend in Austin, Texas. Since the summer break, Ferrari has suddenly taken over the lead in the top-speed department, where Mercedes has always reigned supreme since the introduction of hybrid power-trains. Following an announcement of the sport's regulating body, the Scuderia Ferrari suddenly lost that advantage in the American Grand Prix, which has led to a lot of speculation about the team violating the regulation. Ferrari's defense however, is also sound in my opinion: they claim that they increased their down-force in order to gain mid-corner speed in medium and high speed corners, and more down-force means lower top-speeds as it translates into more drag. Max didn't wait for any investigation into the matter though and said about Ferrari's loss of speed: "That's what happens when you stop cheating," or something to that effect. We'll have to wait for a couple of more races to make a definite judgement, and leave it to the ones who have the data; it's stunning how much the teams, especially the top teams, know about each other. Here's a video with a better explanation; in the meantime I can't wait for the next race, because Brasil has been a treat in recent history and almost always brings exciting races.

Why Verstappen accused Ferrari of cheating

Talking about young talents in motor-racing, here's a surprise I stumbled upon: it just may be that an 11 year old girl will become Max Verstappen's and Charles Leclerc's strongest competition in the not too distant future. This young girls already drives in an F3 racing car and competes against adults, and regularly beats them! Besides, it's about time we had another great driver from the land of the rising sun. Please enjoy the talent of Juju Noda :-) She's the daughter of Formula 1 driver Hideki Noda who participated in three Formula 1 Grand Prix.
