Professional Sport Is An Idiot TaxsteemCreated with Sketch.

Hey Jessportsfans

I've meant to write this post for some time now. It's been something I've been thinking about but couldn't put into words. I am a sports fan and used to spend hours watching football, athletics, rugby, cricket, boxing, motorsport and the like growing up. As these sports continued to grow their reach, the real meaning behind why it all got started seems to be lost on people.

Professional sport to me is a shadow of what it once was. It has become more of a charade. A real example of how trickle-up economics works at its best. It's a way to appeal to humans emotionally to open their wallets and give and give willingly they do.

I've often heard the lotto and gambling being referred to as an idiot tax, and I think professional sport is going that same way if it hasn't already reached the point of no return.

Sport is a proxy for success

I've written about it in the past on how sport mimics success in our lives if our favourite sports team or play wins, we win. It's winning by association, and they've found the formula for monetising self-esteem which has us hero-worshipping these teams and players as modern-day gladiators.

Have you ever wondered why sports fans, in general, get so worked up, sweating, heart racing, feeling anxiety while watching sport? It's because the brain cannot tell the difference between the stimuli. It's the same to the brain as if you were playing. It's a shot of dopamine.

Why would I want to work hard and become the best in my sport when I can watch someone else do it and get the same dopamine hit? That's what the brain is saying, as it tries to become increasingly efficient at getting new shots of dopamine.

Sport keeps you sedated

It doesn't matter if your team is winning or losing as long as you're dopamine drunk, that's all that your brain cares about getting more frequent. It's all the owners of sports clubs and franchises care about in the grand scheme of things.

As fans are sedated by the fix they get from watching a sport they'll crave more of it. Like any junkie, they will give up their hard-earned money to feel more engrossed in the process that gives them their fix.

  • They will pay for the overpriced satellite TV subscription,
  • They will buy the merchandise
  • They will use the sponsors of their favourite teams
  • They will attend games
  • They will bet on games
  • They will spend their time following teams and players social media
  • They will read sports news (being served more ads)
  • They will convince friends and family to join the cult of their choice, I meantime. Yes, they recruit fans because no Ponzi scheme is complete without the recruitment of fresh morons to hold the bag.

Once the indoctrination is strong enough, they will be able to pull money out of your pocket regularly, and you wouldn't think twice about spending it on your beloved sport. Since you're a sports fan and you show your commitment, yeah sports!

Sport moves money up, not down

Ever wondered why these sports stars get these huge salaries? Every wondered why sports teams sponsorships are so lucrative? Do you think Billionaires buy and own sports teams because they don't know what to do with their money?

Of course not, they know exactly what they are doing with their money. They find a way for more suckers to give them money to add to their money; that's how they became billionaires and how they will remain billionaires.

The new sports team is a success story based on cheap money, as are many of the largest corporations running today. When governments print money it needs to go somewhere, it lands in the hand of banks and hedge funds and people who already have large sums of money can have free access to this capital with the modus operandi to spend it to create wealth.

So they spend on these sports teams, buy the best players, build bigger stadiums, get more sponsors, promote the shit out of it until they have enough suckers engrossed in the narrative they build around the brand. Then win or lose you collect your money from the fans and suckers each year, pay off what debt you had and after that its all pure profit.

They are moving the money from the morons paying for the privilege of cheering for millionaire sports stars, while Billionaires get even richer off the back of it all.

Don't get me wrong, I love sport, I love to play it and I love seeing people push the limits of what they can do in any sport. That I can't deny, but the way it is run at the moment, I cannot support such a malicious and obvious money grab that's keeping people poor.

I have friends that are football fanatics and the amount of time and money they spend is crazy I think. Especially when they struggle financially to live.

I know a few people who are exactly the same! I wouldn’t lecture people on how they should spend their money to each their own! It’s funny that these are the same people who would say Bitcoin is a scam yet they actively participate in this scam lol

I’m glad my wife and I aren’t in the clutches of sports addiction. I find it so foolish! I’ve always been kind of against sports growing up. I like playing them but sitting on the couch watching other people do it was a waste of time for me. Granted I played video games but that’s different, you play not watch people play.

My family is in a pretty awful sports addiction, I won’t go into many details but it’s embarrassing. It’s not as bad as some in the grand scheme but personally, what they choose to watch instead of doing something meaningful is atrocious and I’ve lost respect for them.

It’s the world wide fall of Rome all over again. The focus on entertainment instead of the world and things that go in is by design but how will it end is the question?

You telling me you’re not a utterly devoted Red Sox fan? Get the fuck out of here, you probably think you to wicked smart for that! Lol the situation you are describing is the exact motivation for this post!

South Africa recently won the Rugby World Cup, I know who cares right? Well we do! People were going on about this victory as if it had a fundamental impact on their lives, as if their watching and cheering ensured the favourable result

They all debate and share their useless genius on the game and I’m just sitting their thinking wow what a bunch of delusional suckers but you kinda have to keep your mouth or you’re not patriotic! But then again I should always keep my mouth because nothing I’d say is valid

So I stick to steemit where my ideas can come to die!

I just think that I’ve also begun to lose respect for peoples way of thinking! They are such dopamine freaks chasing the next high and then using some logic to make it seem rational

When will it end? That I don’t know! We’ll just have to we’ll continue focusing on things that matter while the rest focus on things that grab attention

I hear this a lot, "What, the team wants the public to chip in $100 Million for a new Sports arena or else they will move to another city?"

LOL like who would care about that? Really rationally speaking! Imagine a normal business said hey you don’t spend enough we moving our business to a other city unless you spend with us right now! We’d tell you to get fucked lol but somehow sport gets people to be utterly loopy
