#BeautifulSunday: Tour de France 2017 rides through my neighbourhood district in Düsseldorf

in #sports7 years ago (edited)

The rainclouds threatened to dampen the beauty of my Sunday, but there were other forces at work!

I mean, you have to admit that it's not every day that Tour de France decides to ride through your little neighbourhood district, right? :)

You read right. . . Düsseldorf is the host city of Tour de France 2017. Even with all the traffic jams and road closures caused by the race's kickoff, the spirits in the city were high and buzzing.

After I made my yummy Avocado Juice for breakfast, we rushed to the corner of Benderstrasse to see the action. On schedule, the road-cyclists were supposed to round the bend around 12.30. We were a couple minutes late because my bro-in-law had hurt his foot and couldn't brisk-walk as quickly as the rest of us, but our 100m sprint on the last stretch made up for it ;)

When we arrived, there was already a sizeable crowd gathered and cheering. Moments later, two police motorbikes came riding round the corner, leading a parade of cars with road bikes perched on top of them.

Then about 5 minutes later, the first cyclists came announced by loud cheers, whistles, and little outbursts of confetti ;)

You could hear the hum of their bikes as their powerful legs spun the wheels! They were so fast, my pulse was racing and goosebumps formed on my skin. It was exhilarating and super thrilling to be standing a meter away from the racers as they sped by!

After the initial bike packs, team sponsor cars and more bikes started to go by, intermingled.

Watch how the cyclists lean their bikes over to make the rather abrupt turn.

This guy decided to overtake the car before the turn!

Finally, this cute little car came careening around the bend, tooting its horn and signalling the end of events for our road section.

Everything was over in 15 minutes. As we strolled home together, it started drizzling, and darker grey clouds gathered. But that could not dampen our spirits, as we made our way home with other neighbours, commenting on the sights we had just shared.

Here's one last memory of this uplifting experience. I really wish you Steemians could have been there too:

That must be awesome! The place has ought to be buzzing! I would love to catch part of the Tour de France

Buzzing is the right word to describe the atmosphere..really wonderful experience :) Hope you get the chance to catch the Tour some day @jeffjagoe! :)

That's one hell of a sight, I always thought Tour de France takes place only in France lol.

Well most of the race does take place in France, and it always ends in Paris along the Champs Elysees :) but portions are held in neighbouring countries, and the last time Tour de France graced German roads was 30 years ago in 1987 when the Tour started in Berlin!

That's nice!

What a way to spend a Sunday! Were there helicopters overhead? We could have possibly spotted you on the television(if we had watched)! The colors are magnificent. The car at the end deserves a lexikon082 as a passenger! I can imagine the little beast tooting its horn and frantically trying to keep up.

I didn't hear any copters (since my eyes were glued to the road and my phone camera lol)..but on the TV, I saw that there were drones and helicopters filming the race.. I know right, it's so kind of the riders to conveniently dress in such colourful riding outfits :)

Hahaha you should have been in that car! You could have taken over the duty of waving the flag..

I LOVE bike racing and in particular the tour de france, so I'm naturally really jealous of you lol :D
The sound of the peloton when it races by you is amazing, and I get goosebumps when I hear it :D

A true bike racing fan you are..I had to google 'peloton' just to be sure you weren't referring to some part of the gear-pedal system :))

Yes, goosebumps forming is exactly what I felt..it was really thrilling..I'm not even that much into bike racing, but it was soo exciting to stand there with the pelotons racing by a meter away..really wish you could have been there too, so you don't have to be envious :D

I does sound like something that could be a part of that lol :)
Düsseldorf isn't that far away, so it would have been doable, but I definitly going to watch it live sometime in the future ;)
Great pictures BTW, it must have been difficult (the speed of the riders) :)

hehe where do you live, @cryptodan?

It was quite a task..My finger was flying over the 'capture' button on my phone..I had to delete a lot of pics to find the better ones :))

I'm from the northen part of Denmark, Aalborg to bemore precise :)

You're a @cryptodane then ;) I've been to Copenhagen once..it was lovely but rather pricey food there..the buildings are very innovative tho, especially the schools..would like to see other parts of Denmark some day :))

You are quite the traveler :)
Copenhagen is super expensive, but a nice place place to visit for a weekend trip. Another great place to visit is Aarhus, they have great art and food there :)

Hi @doctor.fit, I would be simply delighted to join this new project. It is an honour to be invited and a great compliment to my content. Thank you very much! Do let me know any further actions I have to take, and I will be there :))

Hopefully someday you get to experience the riders whiz by you in real life..It really was an incredible feeling, even for someone who is not normally a bicycling enthusiast ;)

Sent you a request!

Man, I didn't get to go to Düsseldorf when I lived in Germany. You'd think that 4 years you'd get to see a lot more than I was able to. I wish I did.

I used to live on Mt. Hood in Oregon and there's a running race every year called "Hood to Coast". NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE in the villages, towns, and cities that they run through like this race because the runners and their fans tend to be really rude and irresponsible by leaving trash and peeing on the side of the road and stuff. Hahahah.

Ewww that's gross..fortunately the cyclists popped up and were through in a flash..no time to stop and pee on the roadside..grr I would have made anyone who did it famous with a pic though ;)

Where in Germany did you live for four years?

Wow, just 15 minutes and over. I was in Antwerp a few years ago and the marathoners kept coming though the road wasn't barricaded off so I find a slot and ran across. Still had to wait quite a while

hahaha I had to do that during the Düsseldorf marathon a couple months ago
