The Fasting Buddha

in #spiritual9 hours ago

This is a wooden sculpture of a Fasting Buddha that I saw in one of the Buddhist Monasteries. This statue has a very deep spiritual significance. This statue is a depiction of Gautam Buddha during his period of extreme asceticism before enlightenment. Gautam Buddha spent 6 years doing extreme asceticism where he starved himself to an extent that his body became like a skeleton. The aim was to conquer the physical desires, but in turn he realized that extreme deprivation to the physical body weakened the mind. And that's where he had the realization that life is not about extremes but taking the middle path. Liberation happens when life is in full balance.

At the same time in this statue also it shows that his face is too much at peace, which also signifies that no matter what happens to physical body if the mind is in control, then nothing can disturb your peace. This particular statue has many deep spiritual meanings. Even when the body decays,s the core consciousness is still alive and fully awake. Enlightenment happens with deep and profound shifts in our perception, where one shatters all ego and pride, gets released from all desires and attachments, has full control of emotions and all restlessness gets dissolved.

Such a beautiful way of depicting Enlightenment.
