A biopsy is generally done to confirm the diagnosis of whether a person has cancer and determine the spread of cancer or its stage. In addition, a biopsy can also be done for several purposes, such as examining blood cells in the bone marrow. In general, there are two types of biopsy, namely closed biopsy and open biopsy. A biopsy is performed by inserting a biopsy needle through the skin (percutaneously) to obtain a cell or tissue specimen, or is often referred to as a needle biopsy or core biopsy. There are two methods of needle biopsy, namely fine needle biopsy and core needle biopsy. Fine needle aspiration is used to take tissue or fluid samples, while a core needle biopsy is used to take larger tissue samples. Before the biopsy procedure, the doctor will perform a series of physical examinations and supporting examinations, such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI to detect abnormalities in certain body parts. After that, the doctor will determine the type of biopsy performed. The following is an overview of the biopsy process:

1. Participants lie on the examination table.
2. The area of ​​the body that needs a biopsy will be cleaned with an antiseptic solution.
3. Give local anesthetic.
4. A fine needle is inserted into the lymph node and the tissue sampling process begins.
5. The needle is then removed.
6. The scar is covered with a plaster.

After the biopsy is done, the patient must rest completely for 2 days and is prohibited from doing strenuous activities. A biopsy is a fairly safe procedure and rarely causes side effects, such as bleeding, infection, tissue damage, or numbness. If the patient experiences these side effects, it is advisable to immediately see a doctor.
