El Akhal Teké, llamada también Akhal Tekkiner, apodado el galgo de los caballos, es conocido por su enorme resistencia, su Capacidad para soportar climas calurosos y su austeridad y frugalidad. Muestra una rara nobleza y es extremadamente veloz. Algunos Akhal Teké muestran una tendencia natural a los aires de tolt y pass.
Se trata de un caballo que posiblemente ya existía en el año 500 a. C. En las amplias estepas de Asia central ya se criaban estos caballos antes del comienzo de la era cristiana. Se dice que esta raza ya existía en tiempos del rey Darío de Persia.
