WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS, MAKE LEMONADE - WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU SNOW, MAKE SNOW CONES

in #snow8 years ago

Many of us have enjoyed snow-cones over the years, and may even have fond memories of them reaching far back into our childhoods.I remember even having some sort of snow-cone machine one year for a Christmas or birthday present. Basically, you'd drop some ice cubes in, turn a crank to grind and slice them up, and then flavor the ice shavings that came out of the machine.

Interesting enough, I had not remembered that for years, but it just came back into my mind as I began to type this up. (See, I told you there were long-lost childhood memories about snow-cones!)

Anyway, since the @papa-pepper tribe is currently back up in Wisconsin, we have a lot a snow available. We've done some shoveling and sledding, but got to try something new as well.

The wonderful @mama-pepper thought that maybe we should make some snow-cones fresh from the wild!

Today I learned that you really can make snow cones using real snow from the wild!

I know with pollution, chem-trails, and other environmental issues, perhaps eating snow off the ground isn't for everyone these days. Many children will still be eating it when the parents aren't looking, but not every parent approves of choices like this. For us, we just avoided any snow that looked that dirty or yellow.

A few of the older girls came out with @mama-pepper and me to harvest some wild snow.

Once our snow was ready, we needed to make a liquid to flavor it with.

In typical @mama-pepper style, my wife looked up a recipe online and got to work, enlisting one of our daughters to help with the process.

Once the flavoring was ready, we got to scooping the snow into little bowls.

Then we began to add the flavoring!

The flavoring liquid made by @mama-pepper and our daughter was great, but I still wanted to experiment. I got some fruit smoothie and juice to try flavoring the snow with.

It seemed that everything we tried tasted great, and we all enjoyed it. Even though I lived in Wisconsin for almost all my life, and even though it snowed every winter, I had never ever tried this before. However, now that I have, I think we'll be doing it again! The kids all enjoyed it very much!

I figured I should record a bit to commemorate this adventure too, so here is a short video.

If you would like to try making something similar, it can be as simple as pouring a favorite beverage into a cup of snow, or you can try the recipe that @mama-pepper included in one of the photos earlier in this post.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Hi @papa-pepper

It looks really nice and you had some quality family time making it, which is priceless.
Here in South-Africa we almost have no snow, and where I live we don't have any at all, we however have slush puppie, which is machine made, and I think it is almost the same, photo below.

Slush Puppies are a great substitute!

Yeah, there is no wild lemon-flavored snow!

Beautiful! The LORD has surely blessed your family! ;)

Of course, as you've said - there are places and times when this might not be the best idea - for instance, @solarguy recently posted about a smoggy day in China where he lives:

Brown snow is not chocolate. Haha.

But it should be

LOL - And yellow snow should be lemonade flavored!

Hi, @solarguy! ;)

Was introduced to you recently, indirectly, via @countrygirl... Cheers! 😄😇😄

@creatr

Yeah, I think in a lot of areas it definitely would not be a good idea!

Thanks again @creatr, we sure are blessed!

Well done. This is all natural goodness.

It sure is, and we enjoy it!

I knew that you were a flake and this proves it. Well done!

@kus-knee (The Old Dog)

You are what you eat!

Using nature's bounty - that's foraging! :D
If you are on a trip, powdered Gatorade or the Koolaid with sugar in it, are great for making snowcones. I always have some handy if I go winter camping or up into the mountains. Snowcones -- nature's way of saying "Aren't you glad it's cold?"

No kidding, what a great idea... Snow Cones on the go!
