What If There Was Another Intelligent Species Before Humans?

Human kind has always wondered about its place in the universe and if there is somebody out there. It is normal for us as an intelligent race to seek another intelligent race. That would answer a lot of questions we have about life and how it develops, especially into an intelligent species.

And while we have looked into space, far and wide, we have yet not looked properly into time for signs of intelligent life forms. Well, I am talking about the possibility that an intelligent species could have existed before we ever came along on the surface of the planet.

Sometimes I wonder if there could have developed an intelligent species that lived for a certain period of time before getting wiped off. Would it be possible?

If no, well, life goes on as usual. But if yes, could we find signs of them? What would it mean for us and our understanding of life?

Finding Signs of An Intelligent Species

When I researched this topic on the internet, I came across several views and I must say, they were all pretty interesting. Basically, when talking about anything that existed in history, our first thought is to look for any fossils or remains that might prove their existence.

For example, we know when dinosaurs existed and how many species of them were there thanks to the large amount of fossils that we have found over the decades.

If an intelligent species had existed, say, even before the dinosaurs or along side them or even after them, could we find proof of their existence as well? Well, some experts suggest that any proof of such a civilisation, would probably be lost completely within millions of years.

Just think in our terms. If we were to disappear tomorrow, everything that we ever built, would slowly but surely start to wither away and in a few million years’ time, there would be virtually no signs of us. Add to that the geographical changes that the Earth would go through in that period and it would become impossible.

So, what other ways are there to find proof of a prehistoric intelligent species, if any? Some experts suggest that we should instead look for the effect that an intelligent race would surely have on the environment.

Studying the different layers of soil, it can be found out when there was a sudden departure from the natural way of things in history. For example, we humans are pumping millions of tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere and it’s signs are definitely being added to the top soil.

After millions of years, this unnatural level of carbon in the then deeply buried soil, could show any future discoverers that we existed once.

This could be done but not much research has gone into this field. Finding any signs of an ancient intelligent life form is a long shot but I think we should still try to answer that once and for all. After all that is what science is all about, asking questions and finding answers.

What If It Were True?

I wonder what would happen if one day someone did find a definitive proof of an ancient civilisation. I mean the legend of the lost city of Atlantis fills us with excitement, right? That’s because we immediately start thinking about the possibilities of what once was.

So, finding a definitive proof of such a civilisation would for sure have the entire world talking. But what effects would it have on our lives, apart from being privy to an important piece of knowledge that no one saw coming?

I think, in general, life would go one as if nothing happened. But for scientists, many more questions will arise and the question of the origin of life would get even more mysterious. Plus, they would surely keep thinking about any hidden technological remains there could be.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on the matter? Do chime in, in the comments section down below. I would love to discuss with you guys!

Sort:

Sign of an intelligent species is technology. Archaelogists and geneticsists have confirmed now that all technology that exists on this planet started being developed only since the Neolithic period, which began around 12000 years before present. These technologies include farming, water management etc.

Also all of the other archaic humans such as the extinct Neanderthal etc have been found to only possess basic technologies like stone tool making etc.

So it is most likely that humans are the first and only truly intelligent species on this planet.

Yeah, the current technological journey began somewhere around 12000 years ago but I wonder if there existed another intelligent species millions of years ago. Because any proof of their technology would have vanished over the years.

So you are proposing that humans are intelligent then? (-:

I think this is a highly controversial notion 😄

It sure is ;)

haha, that is still to be decided :P

life is a gift that is given by the creator for us, as long as we are still breathing fresh air then be grateful and do not forget to his

yes .. if what do you think ??

As nature regains control after the effects of a civilisation end. It would wipe out or at least deeply hide the traces of an intelligent civilisation which makes it sort of impossible for a later civilisation to uncover the earlier one.

Another thought; An earlier civilisation might have been more intelligent than humans that they hadn’t affect the nature greatly which would left nothing to discover.

I agree with your first assessment but if an earlier civilisation didn't even have any effects on nature, we could still find their technological remains no matter how eco friendly, unless time did away with all those.

The forces of nature are great when it strikes. Tsunamis, volcanoes, hurricanes for millions of years can eradicate everything no matter how significant it is. Nature also wipe away what is not belong to it just like the human body if got the chance.

Perfectly said! Nature is just too powerful and after millions of years of huge changes, nothing would remain of any civilisation that could have existed once.

Hi friend... how are you...?? if you vote me... I will back you 💯%

Excellent article @sauravrungta, the most likely is that competition for resources will lead us to war all the time. Knowing how humans behave with their own species, the endless inter-tribal conflicts and the wars that, unfortunately, have lasted thousands of years, I believe that whenever resources or the clash of ideologies cause a problem, and enter into conflict, There would be confrontation. If one of the species were a bit more intelligent, or stronger, or had developed a better technology than the other, it would end by decimating the others. Thank you for your wisdom God bless you.

Regards...

Yeah, if you really think about it, we are not that intelligent of a species at all. If we were, we wouldn't be fighting within ourselves for the resources that are there but working together for the betterment of all. I doubt we will ever reach that state because we would probably have destroyed ourselves before reaching that point.

Thanks for this :)

I highly doubt that an intelligent species could have existed before humans.
That doesn't stop us from stroking our imaginations with conspiracy theories.

I think it's not about conspiracy theories but about asking questions. Science is all about asking questions and finding answers and I don't think we should label everything as 'conspiracy theories'.

The Silurian Hypothesis: Would it be possible to detect an industrial civilization in the geological record?

Some thoughts.
Life has been present on earth for several billion years.
It's bee almost completely wiped out several times.
Man has only been present for about ONE million years.
Our civilization has only been significant for about two hundred years.
Carbon Dioxide is bogus.

Yeah, I have read about the Silurian Hypothesis and it's an interesting one for sure.

For some reason, this is a conversation that has come up often. It is always a fun debate, especially when you have people that are on opposite sides of the argument. Personally, I think we would be naive to think that humans are the only intelligent species in the galaxy. There is so much to the galaxy that we have no knowledge of. Where the real point of discussion comes from is the idea that earth has been visited by extra-terrestrials. Have aliens landed on earth? I don’t know but how could I say no? Humans have visited other planets. 🤔

Well, I didn't mean life elsewhere in the universe. I meant intelligent species that could once have existed on Earth and may have disappeared millions of years ago and if we can find traces of such a species today.
