CAUTION: a picture isn't proof of identity!

in #security8 years ago (edited)

I am amazed to see all these "verification pictures" on #steemit, because a picture is way easier to fake than a video! I decided to try it myself and you can see the result in the image above. I must admit, it's pretty good for my very first Photoshop job ever (i actually used open-source image manipulation software called GIMP)! Now imagine what a professional can do.

Better verification method:

I propose that people from now on make a few seconds long video where they rotate the paper 360 degrees. That's orders of magnitude more reliable than a picture.

You raise a good point, these verification pictures can be faked but it's at least a step in the right direction, and yes I think your recommendation of video verification will probably become the standard in the future of Steemit. That said, I do feel like I would have recognized your photoshop as a fake, it just doesn't look like natural hand writing.

I could have used colors, a different font type and numerous more tools, but that's not the point :)

It's fairly good already if u ask me, every letter has variations in it, that's something u usually don't see. Usually they just add text where you can clearly see multiple letters being EXACTLY identical haha.

This is so true. I have been trying to attract attention to this problem for quite some time. Check out my post: https://steemit.com/security/@sanbir/hi-my-dear-steemers-i-am-karina People don't care about the originality if they see seemingly good content. And most even don't read that content. They just want to get the reward.

It's a problem isn't it? There's a trend towards that direction for now. In time it'll sort itself out. Any upvote with real weight now is being carefully given out after some verification on their part. In time people will have established profiles that can bypass this with repeated postings in essence a historical site presence. I've been careless at times about casting my vote, but it doesn't have a lot of weight behind it at this point. great edit job for first stab also!

Great Job for a Beginner!

Over time, verification photos don't matter. People are usually unable to keep up a false front for very long. Not without slipping up here and there, anyway.

Was the paper in the photo already blank or did you pick a photo off the web, blank it out and make it yours?
Former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders characterized marijuana succinctly on CNN recently, while declaring her support for legalization: “Marijuana is not addictive, not physically addictive anyway.”

Video a solution?

It makes the whole thing a lot more complicated but here is a simple solution:

Introductions should Include a picture of themselves Holding a piece of paper with he's or she's username written on it and with one finger in He's or Her's Left or Right ear!

is true many pictures over there are false

We are on the way to solve this. Some people raised the fact they paid some people through a site to have those video verification, so it would be even harder to do it.

good point. maybe take a pic at a place where it shows more of who they are?

Yeah, or make a simple video :)

That's why taking a video is the true key to verification.
