Drawings of solar observations in the digital age. The sun is blanked again. Falling into a solar minimum.

October 18-2017

Good morning, afternoon, night depending on where the reader is.

Drawing of the daily solar observation. Royal Observatory of Belgium, Brussels.

Despite the absence of sunspots I decided to start today's post with this drawing. Normally in these days of satellites and digital environment still observations are made with optical methods and drawings are still made by hand.

I was struck by the small text that appears in comments:

Un peu nuageux. A little cloudy translated into English.
Looking for information from the person who appears as an observer I have found that he is a technical expert. And not Physical or Astrophysical as I thought.
I have continued to investigate credentials and work done by the signer. And I found this ..

Accelerometric stations with RaspberryPi microcomputer.

"AcceleROB" is an acronym for "Accelerometric station of the Royal Observatory of Belgium" (Seismology-Gravimetry service)

Quote:”The AcceleROB project aims at deploying 90 low-cost accelerometric stations in Belgium in order to measure the real ground motion whenever a larger-than-usual earthquake will strike.”

A very interesting project that uses open source and highly energy efficient machines. A hurray for the Belgians.
The full name of the technical expert is Baudouin Bukasa.

Although in the images of the sun still appears a group of sunspots officially the different agencies that determine the number of sunspots give to the present day like day without sunspots.
And this is so because a mathematical formula is used to calculate the number of sunspots daily. That are actually two numbers. The Boulder Sunspot Number and The International Sunspots Number. Both use the same formula but each includes data from different observatories.
*So “The Boulder Sunspots Number” is provided by NOAA Space Environment Center and “The International Sunspots Number” by SIDC in Belgium.

So we keep accumulating days without sunspots and away from the forecasts of the models.

Falling into a solar minimum.

Allow me to show the graph of the last solar cycles of eleven years.

I would like you to take a minute to see the trend seen in this graph since the 1980 high.

That tendency that the next solar cycle is likely to be even more abnormally low. In addition daily observations support this hypothesis and every day the sunspots numbers are further away from the models that had been made for this year.

Now, we continue with the daily information.

Michelson Doppler Camera (MDI) soho/nasa.

In addition to having the names of groups of sunspots we have in the lower right both the size of the Earth and the size of Jupiter. So we can get an idea of the enormous size of the groups of sunspots.

The sunspots, or rather the absence of them indicates in which part of the solar cycle of 11 years in which we are.

According to some theories, the Earth's climate is greatly affected by this cycle. More heat during the solar maximum, colder during the solar minimum.
There is much more to tell but this is roughly what I have been trying to explain with the presentation of some scientific studies on this subject.
For more information, read my previous articles.

Coronal holes AIA 0211

As for coronal holes we have that coronal hole of the southern solar hemisphere that will send the solar wind fast in a few hours. Another coronal hole also begins to appear in the northern hemisphere of the Sun. The coronal holes are black in this wavelength due to their lower temperature compared to the other areas of the solar corona.

Magnetosphere.

The NASA modeling center offers this graph of the magnetosphere. That is bearing very well the current conditions of space weather.

Summary

The present conditions of the space weather are calm according to the noaa. The solar wind is at 401 km / sec according to the noaa. 362 km / sec and the density of protons is 4 protons per cubic centimeter according to NASA.

Concentration maps of sea ice in the polar regions.

In this graph we see the ice conditions of the Arctic platform. The red line representing this year seems to follow the pattern of the average of the first historical series 1981-2010. Which is excellent news. And because we are in the growing season of the Arctic platform, we expect it to continue to grow.

In this chart we see the conditions of the Antarctic ice. As we can see in the graph the red line that represents this year also is within the historical average 1981-2010. Here the trend is the opposite of the North pole. The thaw begins at the South Pole and we will be very attentive to the accumulated ice data.

In view of the data provided by the University of Bremen I can say that ice in the polar regions is not decreasing.

Global warming is leaving the same ice accumulated in the polar regions or more.

Fantastic news for all of us except for Al Gore!

Enjoy your day. Enjoy your life.

Of course, we had that off to the left thingy happen.

It is very curious how "Global warming" maintains or increases the ice of the polar regions. True?
When trying to politicize science is a bad symptom.
The good news is that the Data do not care about the political ideology of the one who reads them.
