Space weather today (03.16.2018) - the solar wind has arrived
Today the Earth is entering a stream of high-speed solar wind flowing from a wide gash in the sun's atmosphere. Around the Arctic Circle, this is causing auroras so bright that some observers have seen them.

The high-speed stream of solar wind is coming from an unusually wide hole in the sun's atmosphere. Earth could remain inside it for another 48+ hours. Stay tuned for more Arctic lights.
It is the source - the canyon-like hole which has opened in the sun's atmosphere. It is spewing a broad stream of solar wind toward Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory is monitoring the structure, shown here on March 13th:
