What Gives People An Incentive? [Introduction To RBE]
What Gives People An Incentive [Introduction To RBE]
No Evidence
There is no scientific evidence proving that abundance reduces incentive. In current free market system there is fallacious assumption that monetary or material rewards are the best ways to motivate people to work or to be creative. That people "would be lazy" and would not want to do anything if they had all their basic human needs met for free. While it is correct that monetary system can create some incentive, it also creates greed, psychological stress (and insecurity), aberrant behavior (crime), dishonesty and corruption. This is why we do not trust people who are exclusively motivated by material reward.
Many great discoveries and innovations in science and technology have been made by people who have not cared about material gain, for example Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison etc. What they were focused on was possibility of improvement of whole humanity, not the craving for financial reward. They wanted to solve problems to make our lives better. It is true that some great scientists, pioneers, inventors or artists were well financed. But many other received very little and were ridiculed, exploited or even prosecuted for their work. They persevered in their work anyway, because they were motivated by the desire to express their creativity and by the search for self fulfillment. Creativity and the wish to help others are incentives themselves.
Acknowledgment of Needs
Recent discoveries in science of human behavior point out to the fact that our environment to great extent influences our values and behavior. In Resource-Based Economy the incentive is enhanced by acknowledgment of needs of each individual human being. RBE creates environment designed around abundance and social care that freely provides for all the basic necessities of life (basic human needs) such as needs for nutritious food, comfortable shelter, education, health care, psychological and physical security and social acceptance and appreciation. It also provides facilities for creative expression and fulfillment. If basic human needs are met, human potential for creativity rapidly increases and what gives us inspiration, are the things that we all care about. On the other hand, when we are hungry, poor, unappreciated, discriminated, homeless, sick or have no hopes for future, our desire to create and achieve is being reduced.
Social system based on RBE is not focused on incentivizing primitive, shallow and egocentric values that revolve around desire for power, acquisition of wealth or property. On the contrary, it inspires people to search for self fulfillment, creativity and for care of other people, society and our natural environment.
