The Rise of Quantum Computing
Quantum computers are no longer an idea of science fiction, they are very real and could have huge implications on our future.
A quantum computer is unlike a traditional silicon based computer in that it uses quantum mechanics to operate. Quantum computers are incredibly faster than today's computers and will be the super computers of the future. They are able to help solve complex problems through the use of massive computing power operating at the atomic level. In other words, these computers will be able to do things that would be impossible to to do if you didn't have one.
The world’s first practical digital computer with a programming language was introduced in 1957, and it opened up insane new worlds of possibility. Real world problems could now be solved efficiently by using computers. This technology created the gigantic surge in computer sales and distribution among people in the 1960's.
Quantum computing is a huge revolution because it is millions of times more powerful then any computer systems we have today. D-wave is the first company to offer this technology for commercial use, a huge, successful step toward the future of Quantum computing.
Complexity
Because of the MASSIVE computing power of a quantum computer, extremely complex computational problems will be solved with ease. There are mathematical and logistical problems that are so complex and involve so many different possibilities that even a super computer is not enough to power though these problems, or would take much longer than needed. A quantum computer has so much operating power its data sorting with be almost infinite. This ability will allow us to solve problems so much faster because the quantum computer will be able to sort through and analyze so much information at ridiculously high speeds.
Medical Science
The Human Genome project helped us map our DNA and was a revolution in medical science. It was the start of us unlocking the secrets of our DNA, while also revealing how little we know about it. Quantum computers will allow us to analyze human DNA on a massive scale. This process would dramatically change the way we look at medicine and even human psychology. We could better understand our DNA which would allow us to alter and edit our genes, to understand psychology, to live 1000 years, to never get sick, to combine out physiology with bio mechanics, all of which will change the world.
Artificial Intuition
Like our brains, computers process different aspects of an experience, such as shapes, colors and movement. If a computer fails to accurately recognize basic aspects of of an experience, it will send that wrong information to its higher operating systems and will corrupt the entire system, which can be a very high stakes situation depending on the scenario. If you text someone and you meant to write a word and it auto corrects to an unintended word, that's the same process that can happen in computers. For example, if a future military operation requires a robot to scan its environment for possible threats, or a space shuttle is aligning itself to refuel with another ship in deep space, if it messes up information like that it could mean big trouble. This is where quantum computing can help solve this problem because the speed and capability at which it operates with help it avoid these mistakes.
Human Intelligence
The Quantum Computing revolution may be even more profound than the digital computing revolution a half century ago and it will happen much faster. A few things that we would see happen,
- Safer airplanes—Lockheed Martin plans to use its D-Wave to test jet software that is currently too complex for classical computers.
- Discover distant planets—Quantum computers will be able to analyze the vast amount of data collected by telescopes and seek out Earth-like planets.
- Win elections—Campaigners will comb through reams of marketing information to best exploit individual voter preferences.
- Boost GDP—Hyper-personalized advertising, based on quantum computation, will stimulate consumer spending.
- Detect cancer earlier—Computational models will help determine how diseases develop.
- Help automobiles drive themselves- Self driving cars such as Tesla will be better performers and safer thanks to the complex computing power provided by quantum computers
- Reduce weather-related deaths—Precision forecasting will give people more time to take cover.
- Cut back on travel time—Sophisticated analysis of traffic patterns in the air and on the ground will forestall bottlenecks and snarls.
- Develop more effective drugs—By mapping amino acids, for example, or analyzing DNA-sequencing data, doctors will discover and design superior drug-based treatments.
Anything we do that requires a calculation would all be optimized with a quantum computer. From travelling to mars, to genetically altering ourselves, to building giant space machines to harnessing the power of the sun. The technology is still in it's infancy but the ramifications are extraordinary. This technology will change the human race forever in the near future.
