Proving Galileo & Newton Wrong???

Most people on our planet are familiar with Galileo and his revolutionary invention, the telescope. This invention literally changed the way we see our world and the stars above it.

The Tower Experiment

Galileo reportedly conducted an experiment with falling bodies. Reputedly dropping two objects of different weight from the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Both objects hit the ground at the same time, proving that gravity affects all objects equally.

Aristotle's theory of gravity, which states that objects fall at speed proportional to their mass, was incorrect.

Isaac Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation would later validate, mathematically Galileo's observations.

Apollo 15

In 1971, Apollo 15 Astronaut David Scott recreated Galileo's famous experiment in the Moon's vacuum; dropping a Hammer and a Falcon Feather, which landed simultaneously.

Boyd Bushman and the "Bushman Effect"

What we know - Mr. Boyd Bushman (deceased) was reported to be a Senior Engineer at Lockheed Martin and held numerous patents. Before his death he gave numerous interviews and has been praised, discredited and condemned for the information he has conveyed.

During one of these interviews, Mr. Bushman cited a link between gravity and "it's cousin" magnetism. He explained how he created two equal size "rocks"; inside one he placed two very powerful neodymium magnets, forcing the opposing poles together and securing them with a brass screw. The other "rock" was weighted the same, but contained no magnets.

Building 33

Both "rocks" were dropped from a great height in Lockheed's Building 33. The observers at the landing spot, all non-technical personnel, were asked to identify which rock struck the ground first. In each case, the "rock" with the magnets inside landed last.

This is in direct contravention to both Galileo and Newton's findings, which states both objects should arrive at the same time, every time.

Recreating the "Bushman Effect"

Although I thought this information was potentially ground breaking, I really couldn't find any serious science explaining this anomaly.

People have theorized that either the experimenter was introducing basis into the experiment and/or the objects were being influenced by the Earth's magnetic field.

So my son and I decided to recreate this experiment for ourselves, as his contribution to the School Science Fair.

The Results - Surprising

We were actually surprised that not only did we duplicate Mr. Bushman's results; in addition, our ball with the attracting magnets appeared to have less resistance to the pull of gravity and always struck the ground first.

The tests were double blind, as the person dropping the balls and the person filming had no idea which balls contained magnets and which did not.

Obviously further inquiry is needed. We suspect that duplicating the experiment in a vacuum would not make any difference, as the balls were exactly the same size and weight.

I don't think there is a way to conduct this experiment, today on a body with no magnetic field as our personal budget for intra-solar travel is very limited.

Note: In Mr. Bushman's original experiment, he used extremely powerful, expensive (and dangerous) neodymium magnets. The magnetic field from his "rock" with opposing magnets was so powerful, it could be measured 6 feet away.

We purchased cheap, small Neodymium magnets at Home Depot and were still able to document the effect.*

Next Steps

We have a lot of ideas to improve and expand this experiment; including measuring the effects of strong opposing magnetic fields rotating at high speeds or perhaps using a torrid and accelerating plasma to high speeds.

It's all down to time and money.

The Really Important Part

Spend quality time with your children and teach them, challenge them and have fun doing it.

Disclaimer: Science is Fun, Science is Educational and Science can KILL YOU. Neodymium magnets are EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and should never, ever be used by children. Adults should be extremely safety conscious, as serious injury to people and/or permanent damage to expensive electronics can result from powerful magnetic fields. ==>Can you please provide grade and size ( inner diameter , outer diameter , thickness ) of neodymium magnets . Also what is the height of the building ? A link to a site (if it exists) that corresponds to the place where you purchased the magnets would be extremely helpful . What is the camera that you use for recording ?

To understand this effect we have to change one of our fudamental concepts. The concept that brings this all together is that space is not nothing. Space is dark matter/energy, also known as the ether. The ether behaves like a super fine super stiff liquid. The ether causes atoms to spin as it moves through them or they move through it. The higher the relative velocity between the atoms and the ether the faster the spin, or the heavier the atom gets, also the slower time is experienced. This also explains inertia and our inability to achieve the speed of light by brute force. The Bushman experiment shows that a strong magnetic field will cause the ether to flow around the field. The effect is that the rock with opposing magnets does not increase in mass as it falls, while the rock without the magnet does increase in mass as it falls. The increase in mass causes acceleration. The rock without a magnetic field increases in mass as it falls while the rock with the magnetic field does not. The matter inside the magnetic field retains the etheric density that it had when the magnetic field was generated. This is the technology that will allow us to travel many times faster than light speed. This is the foundation science for the Warp Drive.

This is one of the best posts I've read in a long time but I must admit I'm partial to science. I'm tempted to di the same experiment using just the magnets alone and finding a rock of equal mass and duplicating your experiment. Intriguing post

Thank you for your kinds words.

The magnets we used were Neodymium's that were made for cabinet doors. They look like 1" diameter washers with a hole in the middle. Use a brass screw and nut to force the two magnets together and bolt them tight.

The Balls were purchased at Michael's Craft Store and are simply open cell foam spheres. I cut them in half and used non-magnetic washers in the control sphere.

The reason I used the open cell foam was for safety, durability and lack of any metallic content that could effect the results. Plus the weak power of the magnets was a concern,as I wasn't dropping them out of a airplane, etc.

I wrapped them together with colored tape and then weighed them. If one is too heavy or light, just add some tape to make them the same.

If we do this again, I would build a drop box, so the balls are released at exactly the same time to eliminate any human error, which happened to us once.

A good camera capable of slow motion is essential and I believe that if you have a safe high place to drop from, you are more likely to have an easily visible difference between the ball's respective impacts. So in theory, the higher you go, perhaps the more pronounced the visible effect to the observer.

Good Luck

You could add an automated release method to ensure they are released at the same time. Also more drops.

Thank you for your suggestion and for taking the time to read my article.

Greetings, @clearshado and Ryan,

Thank you for publishing this outstanding experiment.

I vaguely recall hearing about Boyd Bushman in the past, but had never attempted to replicate his results. Your experiment and results may cause me to reconsider and try some tests on my own.

I can imagine several improvements to the experiment design.

  • Alternate positions of the balls... for example, it appears that from the viewpoint of the camera, the blue ball was always dropped on the right.
  • As was suggested by @fiveboringgames, an automated release mechanism is an essential
  • Increase the height of the drop to allow for greater accumulation of whatever effect may be in play
  • Use electronic timers for documentation and measurement in order to get some quantitative results. If this were done, you could also simply switch to a single drop, eliminating simultaneous drops altogether. One possible problem when dropping two simultaneously is the question of possible interaction between the magnets present in the two falling objects. With a single, measured drop, that variable is eliminated.

Thank you for an excellent post. Re-Steemed.
