SomethingAboutMe & Seasonchallenge - Saint Nicholas' miracles
For this week SAM hosted by my friend @bluemoon and for my #seasonchallenge, I will tell you a story. One of my memories around Saint Nicholas, the first celebration of the Winter holiday season.
This jolly old man is known as the protector of children. It is also thought that praying to Saint Nicholas before an exam, you will surely be successful. But please note: studying is also very important, the saint can do miracles but not for the lazy ones. Trust me, I tested it. 🙂
Saint Nicholas is the one who brings gifts to children and leave those treats (as this is what children should receive: sweets and fruits, but latrly...) in their shoes. I think this is the only day of the year when children actually clean their footwear. 😂
Many years ago, me and my sister were no different than other children. We were starting to hyperventilate on 1st of December although Saint Nick was supposed to arrive on 6th. Cleaning shoes, trying to find the right spot to place them...these were our main concerns. And the very long hours of waiting, the struggle to fall asleep on St. Nick's Eve...it was an exhausting celebration, trust me. I will not even mention the fear of finding a twig in our boots (as the nice old man has customised presents for the naughty kids 😉). We were never disappointed though: the boots were always filled with sweets, fruits and toys...and a twig, always a twig.
Years passed and we started to hear rumors that presents are actually coming from St. Nick's messengers, our parents. This theory had to be proven, it couldn't be true. I mean...we saw his horse's tracks, he was always coming during the night when everybody was asleep, the cookies we were leaving for him were gone (we always left some homemade biscuits for the saint, my father's favourite sweets). There must be a catch and we were determined to find out what was happening.
The plan was simple. As soon as everybody was asleep, me and my sister would go in the living room (where we placed the shoes) and hide under the couch. This way we could learn what the truth is.
Soon after mom checked if we were sleeping, we listened to the door. Complete silence so we went to the living room and hid under the couch. Imagine two little girls, four big eyes carefully monitoring the dark room. I remember we were so excited, holding our hands and refraining to speak so we didn't divulge our strategic position. Time passed by, minutes seemed hours. Eyes were growing heavy but we were determined to resist. The next thing I remember was the sun rays warming my face. Half of the body was still under the couch while my sister's hands were wrapped around my feet.
Disaster!!!! The shoes were filled with presents, biscuits gone and no trace of Saint Nicholas. He did it again! I mean...how can he not be real since he worked his magic on us and made us fall asleep? 🙂
Do you have memories of Saint Nicholas and his wonders?
Check out the challenge started by me and @erikah, SeasonChallenge. We would love to learn about your impressions towards the Winter (these being the theme until 28th of February).

Haha ! I was caught by your story ! So well told, I was like with you under the cover ! ;-)
Great story and yes, I do have many Christmas as we have always called it here stories. Maybe I will tell sometime. Thank you.
Love
Thank you, @julieabbi2. I'm glad you liked the story. And I would definitely like to read some of yours. 🙂
I will attempt to tell at least one this year.
Thank You
Love
A very beautiful story, well known to me. You wrote it very nicely, almost cinematic, I can see you two small and curious looking awaiting St. Nicholas.
Unfortunately, those times have passed and (at least I) do not believe in old men(?)
Growing up has this ugly side....loosing faith in miracles. I'd wish I could take back time and be again that innocent kid, waiting for Santa. But this is not possible so the best thing to do is trying to create the same beautiful holiday atmosphere for our kids.
And a funny thing is that some girls are still believing in generous old men. 😉
And yet, all the kids, including us, wanted to become adults as soon as possible ... we didn't understand what we were losing.
This is the paradox: as kids we always felt left aside and wanted to grow. I suppose it was the need of "freedom". Staying up late, eating whenever we want and whatever we want, etc.
And now, all that we wish is taking back time. We are definitely veey complicated beings. 🙂
Yes, freedom. You said very well, I didn't realize, but after you said I realize this was ... hope for freedom!
Hahaha, what a funny story 😀 I think all kids go through this.
What did you get this year?
Sweets, I received a whole bunch of sweets. And obviously, I'm on diet. 😒
What about you? Was St. Nick generous?
The good thing is I did not find a twig. 😂
I got chocolate and I'm on diet too 😀
Lol... I guess this is St. Nick's idea to punish us for being naughty. 😂
I wan't naughty, you were :P
Hahaha. I was naughty and proud to admit it. 😜
I knew it! I knew it! LOL
How sweet to tell us this story.😀
I can picture both of you waiting in the dark under the couch.
Thank you, my dear. I'm glad you liked it. Those were really good times. 🙂
You are a marvellous story-teller, Roxy. I have never celebrated St. Nick on 6th of Dec. but we have basically the same tradition without the twig..it’s a lump of coal, left in your stocking, if you are naughty.
Here it is Santa 🎅 (akaSt. Nick) who comes on the night of Dec 25 and leaves gifts under the Christmas tree for good boys & girls.
Even if you heard that Santa’s helpers were your parents, you would still pretended you believed ...it would mean you still would get gifts from Santa.😂
Thank you, my dear. I'm happy you liked my story.
Saint Nicholas is usually being celebrated by the Eastern European Christians but also in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. And I think in some parts of USA.
I think the chunk of coal custom comes from the mining areas of Germany and the Netherlands.
It's funny how the mysteries are being revealed and, furthermore, how we are becoming Santa's helpers. 🙂
I remember being very little, and on Christmas morning visiting at my aunt and uncle's house and my uncle exclaiming in amazement that there were sleigh tracks on the roof of the garage, and he swore he could see the prints of reindeer hooves! I was too little to question why they were on the garage I guess, but it has stayed in my memory as magical proof that Santa was real, because I saw them myself.
Lol... We were so innocent, we believed everything our parents told us and some usual sleigh tracks were enough proof of Santa's existence. 😂
Of course the old man would have parked on the garage. Why bothering to land since his visitdis not last more than few seconds? 🙂
I've always wondered if my uncle went out during the night and drew those lines in the snow on the roof of the garage just to create a bit of magic for the children.
I'm pretty sure this is what he did. The first clue was the fact that he was the one pointing out the obvious. 😂
