Hull HauntingssteemCreated with Sketch.

I often wonder what the walls - or rather hull of a boat would say if you asked her about her notable moments.

Would tales of an equatorial crossing amuse her audience? Perhaps a Whale encounter of epic proportions would be part of her memoirs. There could be stories of warm lazy days, accompanied by stormy and rough seas too. If her hull could speak, what would she say?

This hull would begin her saga with a humble birth in a driveway in Surrey BC. A German carpenter named Hans had a vision of a blue hulled sloop to be named SV Indian Summer II. While the original plans were a Tony Skidmore design; Hans hand layed her fiberglass hull, and took meticulous detail to her construction and finishing. Hans also took thoughtful detail to her layout - something her current owner appreciates a great deal. In her 30 years at sea this vessel now named SV Rather Knotty has sailed many a nautical mile in the pacific northwest. In time, perhaps she'll have accounts from all of the seven seas.

I took this photo a while back on a gloomy summer night. It reminded me of how eerie the history of a boat can be. Sailboats in particular can outlive many of their crew. I like to think that when I am gone, I'll be able to haunt the hulls of my favorite boats - perhaps with a few poltergeist antics too.

Where would you haunt?

I've wondered the same about some Chicago sailboats that have done the Race to Mackinac maybe 30 times. So much has changed but so much is the same when you are out on the lake...

Very true!

maybe there's a journal documented by all the crew who sailed with her before and each time the tales accumulate and pass on to the hands in future.
