Winter running motivation

in #running7 years ago (edited)

In this port, I will help you stay motivated to go running and take care of your health by doing it, or keep training for a race in the winter. As the sun goes down very early with winter hours, most runners have to run at night and enduring colder temperatures during this period.

Tip 1: run with friends

Running with a group of friends will always get you more motivation to get out after work and especially now. It will help you go training while you don't really want to and maybe do a longer run in the dark than you would expect to do alone.

Tip 2: Use layers

While it's cold and dark outside, it is easy to loose motivation for a run and especially if you care about being cold at the beginning of the run. My advice is to use the necessary clothing not to get cold at the beginning and help you go outside. Use removable layers or do a small warm up loop before of 20 minutes in order to get warmed up, and you can remove some layers, put it back at your house or in the car, and go finish your run.

Tip 3: training Planning

It is easy not to go running if you didn't really plan it before. Your mind might be going forward and backward to the idea of running, but most of the time the "no run" would win. But if you plan your training at least every week, you will have an aim to go running some days and not get culpability for not going.

Tip 4: run as a commute

If you are lucky enough to live close to your work, try to run to work. It will need a bit of logistic adaptation, but once you get used to it, you won't loose your training session anymore!

Tip 5: tread mill or home trainer

For pure runners , you might be able to access a tread mill at a local gym or even get one yourself. It is a good way to do specific training while watching TV and not caring about the weather.
For those adepts to cross training, try the bike home trainer. It is a great way to train specific on a bike and more comfortable than the tread mill. Be careful, take care of drinking at least a liter per hour as you will sweat way more than outside with the lack of air circulating.

These were a few tips to run/train at this hard time of the year.
