Arrogance. It's the universally unattractive shadow of confidence. Unfortunately, all of us have had moments of arrogance. That's why today I want to offer fellow Steemers a few tips on how to convert arrogant tendencies into confident qualities.

Recognizing Arrogance

In order to fix a problem we first have to recognize it. Here are a few characteristics of an arrogant person.

  • An arrogant person thinks that they are always right.
  • An arrogant person believes they're superior to the people around them.
  • An arrogant person corrects everyone around them.
  • An arrogant person believes that their ideas are the best ones in the room/building/city/world.

Do you recognize any of these qualities in yourself? If so, let's move on to replacing them with confidence.

Replacing the Arrogance with Confidence

Be upfront about what you know.  Admit when you don't know something and recognize opportunities for learning something new. Try using the sentence: "Tell me more about it."

Make Eye Contact. When you first meet someone, practice making eye contact with them long enough to say their eye color in your head. After a few weeks of practice, your eye contact habits will be improved.

Decide not to be offended.  Next time someone teases you, and you feel like reacting. Take a breath. Ask yourself why you're reacting, and then ask, is it worth it? We all have idiosyncrasies, and we all make mistakes.

Give honest (and not-generic) compliments.  Pay attention to the conversation. Then, when someone says or does something that you appreciate - let them know. Finally, tell them why you appreciated it.

Give people credit. Simple as that. It feels nice to be appreciated, and often, the person who's appreciated returns the gesture.

Don't blame people for your mistakes. We are all fallible. Take responsibility for your actions and try to learn from your mistakes.

Thanks Steemers!

And, let me know if you have any other methods for dealing with arrogance! I'd love to hear them.
