It's a PIE ... on the BRAAI

I've been doing the braai pie since 2010, and I sort of assumed everyone knew exactly what it was and even made there own. If you just google Braai Pie, you'll find about 100 different ways to make it now. I myself have done everything from game to dessert braai pies in the past.

source: stolen from whatsapp years ago
You know what they say about assumptions though, right? Well.. it turns out not everyone has tasted or even heard of it, and so the guys at Chad-O-Chef asked me to make one as a treat for the staff after day 1 of The Fire & Feast Meat festival.

What's Fire & Feast? Check this post and this post for a more on what went down at the festival.

So what exactly IS a braai pie then?

In short: It's puff pastry, lined with spinach (yip yip, I do eat greens every now and then), and filled with pretty much whatever your little heart desires. Using a "toeknyp rooster" (loosely translated as a fold-up grid) it's then grilled on direct heat over medium to low coals.

Making a Braai Pie!

Braai until the pastry is done (golden & crispy)

TIPS:

  • Everything inside your pie must either be able to be eaten raw or cooked before going inside.
  • Some egg-wash ensures an even more golden crisp finish.
Time to chow!

That looks really yummy! I love spinach, and all those fillings would be a delicious combination! 😋 Would love to see you start using the #steemitbloggers tags in your posts now! Thanks for sharing this great recipe with us!

Hey @thekittygirl ... thanks for popping by!
Yeah, the fillings are a delicious combo indeed!

Re @steemitbloggers ... I've been trying since yesterday to get my new videos onto @dtube, but to no avail. Fear not... I will prevail, and yes... I will be using the tag from now on :-)

@braaiboy... I struggled a lot with Dtube too... try an optimizer like "handbrake" its a free download app. optimize your vids on there and then re-try the upload. that worked for me, otherwise - try Dlive (although you may find you still need to ue the optimizer app) - from what I have gathered, Dlive, is better in terms of.... well.... a few things ;) Hope you get sorted :)

here is the link: https://handbrake.fr/

I totally agree with what @jaynie said, that Dlive is better than Dtube. For one thing, they don't delete your videos after a week or two, as I have heard Dtube does. They also don't take a percentage of your earnings as a fee. Lastly, Dlive streams better; Dtube never loads for me (and the majority of people I know on Steemit have problems, too), so I was unable to watch the video linked in this post. Sometimes Dlive doesn't load, either, but it does more often than it doesn't.

Unless you are totally opposed to using YouTube (now owned by the Google overlords), it is a much faster-streaming option, overall. And if you make a Steemit post with a link to a YouTube video, you still earn the rewards on Steemit.

Just some thoughts, but you do whatever you feel is best for you! And that pie does look delicious!!! 😋

thanks for the support love hon!!!!

Awesome pie! Never heard of this before (I live under a rock on a beach in Central America!) but man! I am going to try this one! Thanks for posting!

Hey @cecicastor ... thanks for popping in and checking out my video.
Yeah, the pie has been a crowd favourite for many years now - you HAVE to try it... YUMMY!

P.S. Hope things get better soon for you guys over on that side of the world. Stay Safe!

Thanks, @braaiboy! Things are messy and they will be for a while...

That made me hungry, why do I visit late afternoons knowing if you post, I will die slowly till dinner time, then try to make something to fill the gap @braaiboy

Never tried that one!

hahaha.... it's part of my evil plan... "honger is die beste kok" ;-)

Whats crackalacking bad boy.. I see you rocking like a boss now man well done. What do you know about dlive I chatted to a mate and they reckon it beats dtube you tried it? I plan to tonight. When we having BEAZ again? Laterzzzzz ps I see steemitbasicincome working for you now was this from my reg? Still nothing my side I did get a notification telling me I am registered though.. Cheer$;)

Hey man,

I tried @dlive from @robtheranger 's account... I'm running it for him, in the (currently vain) attempt to prove that quality content can get noticed and he should make Steemit his new home. I'm a big fan of what DLive COULD be (not least of which is because they don't have the huge 25% chunk that @dtube takes), but unfortunately it's still too new to be useful.

The problems I experienced (and why I'm sticking with DTube for now).

  1. DTube fixed their painful upload experience / DLive still takes forever to get a video uploaded.
  2. I'm (occasionally) promoting my Steemit/DTube content on FB/twitter and the playback of DLive videos (I assume from here in SA only) is very buggy and has too many pauses (assume some sort of buffering) while watching.
  3. DLive is littered with gamers streaming content (nothing wrong with that, but you can't find any other content if you're just 'surfing for shit to watch'). DTube has it's own problems, but you're more likely to have someone "stumble upon" your DTube video than a DLive video.

FWIW: I'm looking at it for a new live series I'll hopefully be kicking off in the near future though, and will use DLive for that... but for now: pre-recorded videos seem to fit in better on DTube (for me anyway).

Re Beers: Doing Thirst tomorrow night for RoadToSTRAB party - see you there?

Re SBI: I actually had a chat on their discord - you are reg'd and you have started getting UVs (they have 8 pools/accounts from which you get upvotes). Because I post so infrequently, I'm in pool #1 (@steembasicincome) - but look out for votes from @sbi1, @sbi2 ... @sbi7 (my @incubot and @playdice accounts get votes from there too because of their posting frequency).

I just love me some braai pie. I made one once with some skinny wors, fried onions, sundried tomato pesto and grated cheese. I really need to do it again one day. I like the egg-wash idea, I did not do that and my pie could have used some crispyness!

indeed... the egg, while not totally necc, does add that little something little extra.

Oh boy I'd do anything now for a braaipaai @braaiboy! I really like your method with the raw spinach, much easier!

While I don't mind spinach, I'm not going to go out of my way to add it to a recipe... but in this case it definitely helps keep all the ingredients inside the pie... and admittedly does add to the flavour too ;-)
