I Had to Fire My Contractor Today

in #realestate6 years ago

Yesterday I posted a progress video for my new real estate office. You can see that post here:

We are making progress with the office, but it has gone incredibly slow. Today I went to the building with my project manager Nikki. We were making a list of all the things that still need done.

While we were there, my contractor called Nikki. She started asking him how we can speed things up. He got super offended, starting saying how he can't control his crew while he is out of town (he is in Texas all week). Basically saying there is nothing he can do and we should not be upset that it has taken him 7 weeks to do a crappy paint job. Nikki didnt back down and the contractor told her he didn't need the job and didn't care.

I have worked with this contractor for years, and he knew how important this job was to us. We are working in a temporary space until this work is done. He really pissed off Nikki by saying he didn't care. That really pissed me off too. I text him right then and told him to pull his crew. He sent me some text back saying how it was my fault his crew was so slow and he was doing everything he could. I told him again he was done.

I then told him he needs to fix the brand new fence his crew got paint all over. He responded with: "I will address that when I get back , your little tantrums ain't help the team at all !!!" This made me feel even better about my decision. In fact, I felt really good about firing the contractor. I knew it would take another two months at the pace he was going. We had another crew we work with in the building in about an hour.

I got more good news later in the morning. Our floor samples came in!

We are going to use an epoxy over the concrete and these are my favorite colors.

All I can do is look ahead. I think things will go much smoother now. Nikki and I joked that the new contractor already got more done today than the old one in 7 weeks.

It is so much easier to cheer from the sidelines on firing someone than doing it in person. Shocked the contractor was willing to lose so much long term business. Keep up the progress.

I know. He got some other new clients recently, which gave him a big head. Those are short term clients though.

You've attracted the bot commentors... You've truly made it now! hahaha

It's funny that we can build relationships over years of working with someone, and they somehow manage to just piss it all away. I guess he felt that he didn't need your business anymore. Seems to me any contractor would be thrilled to have consistent work like you, I am sure, provide.

With the number of projects you have going on, I feel confident you will easily find a slew of contractors chomping at the bit to get on your call list. Here's hoping you find ones you can work with amicably for years to come!

Hope the new office gets moving in the right direction and you have the work space of your dreams soon!

Yes, we have 5 other contractors we work with, but he was getting more work than anyone else. We could see this coming as he was getting slower and slower. He was showing up less for his crew and basically hoping I would do all the work for him.

Funny how rather than trying to make it up to you he basically told you to pound sand. Sounds like you definitely made the right move. Any chance he liens your property?

I know! It would be almost impossible for him to lien the property. He actually has no contract with us on it and it is tought to lien in COlorado.

Lucky! In Georgia it's super easy to lien property. Contractor doesn't need to prove anything to place the lien (still battling that one gc from my email).

congrts sir @investfourmore for your new Contract all the best
