DAY 6 - The Day of the Lord

The Biblical term which God actually uses for when His end-time wrath will be poured out is the “Day of the Lord”. The first time that it shows up in Scripture is in Isaiah chapter 2.

Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty. The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low.... And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day” (Isaiah 2:10-12 & 2:17)

Though this particular passage doesn’t mention God’s wrath (only Him humbling the proud), because God does use the term “the day of the LORD”, we can see if He has more to say about it elsewhere.

The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,” (Zephaniah 1:14-15)

Here we finally have what we have been waiting for; an actual mention of God’s wrath and the term that God Himself uses to describe it.

The great day of the LORD is… a day of wrath”.

Though this passage doesn’t specifically state that this wrath is God’s wrath, we have still have more verses to consider.

Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty… Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.” (Isaiah 13:6 & 9)

For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries: and the sword shall devour, and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north country by the river Euphrates.” (Jeremiah 46:10)

Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD, Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.” (Joel 1:14-15)

We see that several of the prophets use the term the “Day of the LORD”. Since that is the case, we can gain understanding into this time period, unlike with the unbiblical phrase “The Tribulation”. Besides being a time of God’s wrath, there are other characteristics that God shares with us when He is defining this phrase that He uses.

Point #1: The phrase that God uses to describe the time when He will pour out His end-time wrath is the “Day of the LORD”.

Point #2: The “Day of the LORD” is mentioned in multiple places in the Bible, which allows us to search for specific characteristics of this time period.
