Random Japan #67 :: Onigiri

in #randomjapan6 years ago

Hello and welcome, wonderful and amazing readers. Today's Random Japan will be a short one, because I am on the go, but perhaps an interesting one, because I have with me what may well be the single most common food you will find in this country.

Let's jump right in and look. Ready? Good. Let's enter into...

Random Japan!

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you... Onigiri!

That's pronounced Oh-nee-gee-ree, usually translated as rice ball, though as you can see it is more of a triangle.

These things are super common. If people want to pack a quick lunch or snack, chances are pretty good it will include a few onigiri, which are easy to make—just stick some rice in some cling film, press it together and form it into a triangle, and there you go. Often the rice will be wrapped with nori seaweed, but not always.

Convenience stores also feature onigiri of all kinds, and by that I mean all manner of things are put in the middle. Usually fish, or, in the case of my photo, ume (pickled plum), but you will also find others. These are cheap and relatively healthy (as long as you ignore all the chemicals added), so they make a great snack on the go.

That's all, folks. I know, short today. I will give you more next time. And as to next time... please be sure to turn in next time when, if providence allows, I shall return for another Random Japan. See you then!

Random greetings from Estonia :) Keep posting!

Looks good! Where I live you can only find this in some Japanese restaurants (but most don't serve it).
