June 8: Happy World Ocean Day!
“Life is like the ocean. It can be calm or still, rough or rigid, but in the end, it is always beautiful.“
Hello Steemians!
Today is World Ocean Day and as a nature lover, I want to showcase some of my ocean photos. This is also my submission for the @qurator’s Photo Friday.
Different associations and organizations around the world has been promoting June 8 as World Oceans Day since 2002. This day is celebrated in different ways such as launching new ocean campaigns and initiatives, special events at aquariums and outdoor explorations. In 2014, the United Nations launched the World Oceans Day Oceanic Photo Competition.
Some Ocean Facts
The ocean, the planet’s mega museum and home to the world’s largest living structure known as “the Great Barrier Reef” that measures around 2,600km.
70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans and only 5% is explored.
The earth is divided into 5 oceans; Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Southern Ocean.
Pacific Ocean is the largest ocean on Earth. The word Pacific Ocean comes form the Latin word ”Tepre Pacificum” or peaceful sea.
Ferdinand Magellan a Portuguese explorer, is the first known voyager to navigate the Pacific ocean through his expedition set off from Spain on September 20, 1519 through the Atlantic Ocean and reach the Pacific Ocean in 1520. (One of my favorite part of the history subject!)
The deepest known of the Earth’s oceans is called “Mariana Trench”.
Hope you enjoyed ready!
Until next time!
