Finding your Strengths!

in #psychology7 years ago

Like most people, I was constantly being told to focus on my strengths and let others handle my areas of weakness as a means to success. They say most successful people are self-aware, allowing them to make informed decisions on what to handle themselves and what to delegate to others in order to reach their objectives. In reality though, I struggled with this because I was unsure of what my strengths were as I find enjoyment in a number of areas in my life. So I set out looking for advice on how others had found their strengths and succeeded with the intent to replicate this process and share my results with others looking for similar results!

What do Strangers compliment about you?

The first piece of advice I received was to think back to all the compliments that total strangers had given to me over the years. Do they say you have a great smile? Maybe you should look into using that smile to grow your social media following, or be seen in print or video. Did they find you charming or a good listener? This could be a good indicator that you should work with people in a coaching or sales environment. I personally found people have always complimented my physique so I began to focus on learning all I could about healthy diet, exercise, disease, and how I could help others live life with mind and body in sync!

DISC

Next, I was referred to a personality test called DISC. This was created by Dr. William Moulton Marston in the 1920's whose findings were published in his book Emotions of Normal People. This book split peoples emotions into 4 quadrants Domiance, Influence, Steadiness, and Compliance. Over the years this test has evolved to help businesses hire employees when looking for certain personality traits.

The test I personally took was focused on behavior styles based on the four dimensions of Decisive, Interactive, Stability, and Cautious. The thing I found interesting is it also breaks down the traits shown when I am acting naturally and authentic, versus when I am being observed or even overly self aware of my behavior. You can give a try at this link here - https://www.innermetrix.com/disc-index/

The Results

I was not that surprised by the results, other than how one sided my personality was. The breakdown was as follows:

"Higher D (Decisive) - Tend to solve new problems quickly and assertively. They take an active and direct approach to obtaining results. There may also be an element of risk in taking the wrong approach or developing an incorrect solution, but those with a High D score are willing to take those risks, even if they may be incorrect."

"Higher I (Interactive) - Tend to meet new people in an outgoing, gregarious, and socially assertive manner. People scoring in this range may also be a bit impulsive. Generally speaking, those with Higher I scores are generally talkative and outgoing."

"Lower S (Stabilizing) - Tend to prefer a more flexible, dynamic, unstructured work environment. They value freedom of expression and the ability to change quickly from one activity to another. They tend to become bored with the same routine that brings higher S traits. As a result, they will seek opportunities and outlets for their high sense of urgency and high activity levels, as they have a preference for spontaneity."

"Lower C (Cautious) - Tend to operate more independently from the rules and standard operating procedures. They tend to be bottom-line oriented. If they find an easier way to do something, they'll do it by developing a variety of strategies as situations demand. To the Lower C scores, rules are only guidelines, and may be bent or broken as necessary to obtain results."

What Did I Learn?

This journey was eye opening and helped me pivot in certain areas of my life leading me to the cryptocurrency world, and to you my fellow steemians!

Realizing that I do well with taking risk and thinking decisively actually led me to jump into the stock market (stay tuned to find what investments i'm currently in) and Litecoin at $13 earlier this year, and we see how its done since then! Because of my timing I have been fortunate enough to see the evolution of cryptocurrency as Bitpay and tenx debit cards were released, segwit successfully implemented on litecoin, and now EOS. I believe each of these steps are moving cryptocurrency further towards mainstream adoption, as can be seen by the number of countries approving its use.

Learning more about myself has helped me self-assess in times of uncertainty to make decisions that fit my goals long term. This test also helped me determine where I was lacking, as I can have a tendency to choose socializing over immediate work tasks and can be a bit disorganized at times. I even have found a number of amazing books that have helped me expand my personality, and a girlfriend who helps balance out my SC while i give her the DI (haha).

In conclusion, I hope this helps you find happiness and profit for what makes you unique! Share your results below, I would love to learn more about others in the community!
