Increasing Numbers Turning To Mindfulness

Being mindful consists in paying attention to the sounds around you, to your breathing, and to the present moment that you are experiencing in life. By pursuing mindfulness, you are in a way shutting down your cognition because you are focusing much more on your senses in the moment, rather than focusing mental energy on thinking about the past or future.

“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; On purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn

Previous studies have suggested that most of our lives we spend engaging in activities that we aren't consciously thinking about. In other words, most of what we do from day to day is carry out various repetitive habits (our pattern of life) and this is often automatic and doesn't require much active thought, whenever we are carrying out common daily activities.

Mindfulness has only become a commonly used term in the past couple of decades, the term and practice itself is still gaining popularity around the world. Though it is something that no doubt has been practiced for many years throughout human history. But in the last decade alone it has surged in popularity. You can now find mindfulness programs in various schools, within the military, in programs for professional athletes, in the business workplace, and other areas.

Though the practice might vary from person to person, it generally consists in trying to redirect your mental energy and focus toward engaging in a more conscious way; by focusing on the simple things around you and how you are experiencing life in the moment.

Those who engage in this practice do so for various reasons. Many individuals commonly make the claim that they are engaging in the behavior in an effort to try and reduce their stress and anxiety. And there are plenty of mindfulness meditation studies out there, to support the narrative that there are possible benefits to be reaped from engaging in this practice.

There are a number of mindfulness meditation apps and classes that are now available in the market, it's clear that there are millions of people out there who are interested in this activity and in trying to find a simple way to find and maintain more peace in their lives.

Mindfulness is promoted as being a present-oriented state of being that isn't focused on judgment. You are not focusing mental energy on thinking about the past or the future, but instead are only thinking about the present moment and what is going on around you. Aside from helping people to maintain calmness, it's also been said to help build resilience, foster humility, boost productivity, and help individuals see things in life a little more objectively.

Mind Full or Mindful?

Very good post. Thanks for sharing.

Your picture depicting mind full or mindful struck home with me. When I was working my mind was full and it seemed at the time that mindfulness was elusive. Thinking back during my education process it would have been very beneficial to be taught this important lesson and the path to achieving mindfulness.
Thanks for another interesting post.

Philosophy and proper meditation (which is to say an exercise to increase mindfulness) have been tremendously helpful in my life.

Now, I happen to disagree with a large chunk of what the person in the video below says, but I do think that there's something to the idea, that many whom claim to be Objectivists never quite reach the psychology that they would praise, while Buddhists may be relatively psychologically stable in everyday life, but avoid deeper considerations of logical epistemology almost entirely.

"Objectivists" whom fail to achieve psychological stability tend to be "mind full", but not "mindful".
