Practical Pruning Lessons - We can teach our children to be custodians of the Environment Part 2
Today, my son Frank-Kightley who is 9 years old and I continued pruning the flowers in the south side of our home and just a few in front of the house.
There was a lot of improvement in his pruning skills because the south side of the house was high and he needed a chair to stand on to learn how to prune flowers that are very tall.
Lots of kids from the neighborhood called around to watch what Frank-Kightley and I were up to and they were amazed with how much effort their peer put in pruning the flowers.
Personally, I must say I am proud of this young man that I am training to become a custodian of the environment. One thing he is beginning to master is to gauge the level of pruning with his eyes and make sure all the flowers of the hedge have the same height without using a line.
I must say I am very impressed with how fast this young man is learning and we keep on at this pace, he will become a master in pruning flowers in less than 2 years.
The flowers which we are pruning were planted by us, four years ago and we are happy that they have given our home some extra beauty.
We gathered leaves and branches from the pruning to our garden that is just a few meters from our home. At the garden, we added them to a compost heap and also put some of them beneath our plantains to compost.
Our garden is where we compost all the organic waste we generate from our home and it’s where we grow our vegetables, plantains, lemon grass, sugar cane and lots of stuff. During the rainy season, we do a lot of composting and in the beginning of the dry season, we farm the area.
By the end of the day, we had pruned 17 meters of a hedge on the south side of our home and this is what it looked like.
Tomorrow, we shall complete pruning the front part of our home. This is what it looks like before our work but I am sure by nightfall tomorrow, you will enjoy the work we must have done.
The sky was very bright at the time we ended our work of today.
