More than a blogging platform

in #protocols8 years ago (edited)

Currently, Steem Power and Steem Dollars are rewarded for great blog posts on Steemit. But Steem is a protocol, similar to TCP/IP (protocol underlying the Internet) and SMTP (protocol underlying email), and it can be applied to much more than a blogging platform. At its core, Steem is a global point system that rewards users points for their contributions.

I believe we’ll see use cases beyond blogging emerge over the coming months as the GUI is built out and interest increases. Here’s some potential use cases for a global point system:

Q+A (Quora + Steem): Answer questions and earn Steem. Quora has offered bounties for answers in the past but can't do it at scale.

Product launches (Product Hunt + Steem): Launch new products and provide product feedback, earn Steem.

Livestreaming (Periscope + Steem): Stream live video, earn Steem.

Crowdfunding (Kickstarter + Steem): We’ve already seen some crowdfunding attempts on Steemit. A platform specific to crowdfunding is the next step.

What other use cases beyond blogging make sense for the world's first open, global point system?

Fine points sir! In the platforms beta phase, we've managed to attract a slew of interesting characters. But the community is still in fact dominated by block chain devs and crypto investors/bloggers. I think the platform has to prove it's stability/legitimacy to the general public which will likely begin with the rollout of a more sleek, all-inclusive GUI. Once it does, we'll witness a massive influx of users from a variety of skill backgrounds -that's when the first true Steem Services (first use!) will begin to mature. As it stands, STEEM is accumulated then traded via exchange. Can we use it on the site? Can I convert my thoughts, opinions, support, love of community into a product or service? In some places, yes! The future is new and exciting. Keep them coming!

The vast amount of options laid out in the post blows my mind. The complexity of what Steem could be is phenomenal, and this post made me realize it.
Add to the list;
Open source product development and testing- expanding out with 3D printing at home with designs listed for free on Steem, earning Steem when you propose needed changes or additions.

I agree ,steemit has come a long way as it is and its not even really started yet. With the right support from the devs and some faith and investment by us steemians the skys the limit. Dont forget were still in beta at the moment so there lots still to happen. We are the bold pioneers of steemit : )

Totally agreed. A little patience and perseverance.. we can do anything.

There is just so much.

  • Photography is doing quite well here, but it could do even better with a platform of its own. That way you wouldn't just be upvoting posts with good photography in them, you could be voting for the photographs themselves.
  • Animation open source software similar to Blender where we can not just vote for quality 3D animations, but actually buy them from eachother for use in our own animations
  • Music! Somebody here (I don't remember who) once suggested steemit could be a great platform for buskers. I think we could do even better than that by having a steem platform for all kinds of self-made music! This could solve the problem many artists have with piracy! You could simply vote for it in order to download it!
  • The same thing could be done with movies where once you've watched it if you like it you give it your vote
  • Commerce would obviously do really well, not only can you send your steem dollars to purchase lets say a new camera or something, but you could also give it your upvote as part of a review
  • A Twitter like platform would be nice to filter out the memes here

And of course what you've already listed, crowdfunding, livestreaming, questions and answers even educational platforms, on which professionals upload teaching content and everything is categorised by subject so it's easy to find!

This could be so big that it's kinda scary... lol

I just used steemit as a platform for the Audio Version on my work of fiction.

Thanks! I am looking forward to more.

Also I will be featuring exclusive art by other steemit members (and rewarding them with steem earned).

Thanks for opening my eyes. I've just been trying to keep up with the learning curve of the basic concept. I'm glad I'm here early to watch and participate in all of what can come.

Your Twitter link is not working. I would like to follow, but can't find you there.

Good catch, thanks! Link updated :)

Yup, lots of different things that COULD get built, which is what's great about all the new protocols that are emerging.

The nice thing about the steemit website is that with tags alone, we could start experimenting, without having to build anything else.

I definitely like the Product Hunt for Steem concept. PH when it started wasn't actually about just new new stuff -- it was just people "hunting" interesting tools.

I'm going to start sharing under the #steemit-hunt tag about some tools that I like using to beta test this idea.

I like it, I'm in on the #steemit-hunt tag

How true . I thank you for reminding people of it.
