Gratitude and My Steem Journey with Many Doors Opening - a Response to a PowerHouseCreatives Contest...
My Steem Journey...
How I first came to Steemit
I was looking to have diversity in my investments and wanted some cryptocurrencies but I didn't want to invest my hard earned dollars into such a volatile market.
I had heard about Steemit a number of years ago. It was touted to me as a way you could make $20 dollars a day posting. That sounded good but I was more into eCommerce at the time and let the opportunity slide for a bit.
Further down the road, with warnings of a looming economic crisis, I decided I'd check out this Steemit thing again. My idea was to use all that PLR content I had stored on my hard drive for posting to make myself some cryptocurrency.
Once I got into setting up my blog and engaging with some Steemians like @mountainjewel @riverflows my whole concept of what this Steem thing was changed. I think I did one post using my PLR content before I awakened to the awesomeness there was here on Steem! I was motivated to get back into writing and to up my game - adding value to the blockchain!
I was fascinated with the different folks I was meeting from all over the world who were posting about things I had a keen interest in. Then I found out about the different communities (one of the first being @ecotrain) and I was having fun with the different contests and challenges being presented! I no longer really cared about the crypto so much, it was more about the people and the communities.
I came for the crypto - I stayed for the communities!
I had got my love of writing back and the level of engagement with genuine, supportive, like-minded folk kept me going through the rough patches like after the last Hardfork and the changes it bought about plus the drop in crypto prices - specifically STEEM. There was lots of ups and downs but I found the the connections through the communities was pretty steadfast.
It was exciting to see the development of new communities here on Steem, serving a purpose I believed in. Like -
@NaturalMedicine
They're all for empowerment through natural wisdoms, and love to support those on their healing journey!
@HomesteadersCoop
Here is a concept that was really opening doors, such possibilities and a strong community pulling together with great potential coming forth. It was enabling folks to participate in an alternative economy through a International community marketplace (venue at http://HomesteadersCoop.com ) that accepted STEEM, SBD, Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) plus there is the option to barter or take part in a gifting economy! And there is no middle man cutting into your profits. No fees - it's 100% free service! I opened my store - Porters Place there and I love being able to easily shop with my aarned STEEM or SBD. I've bought tinctures and lovely lavender sachets. Here's the box opening from those purchases where I received some lovely surprises!
I love to see the power of Steemians pulling together! Like when we got Steem listed on Netcoins and the team effort to win the 200,000 SP delegation from @theycallmedan - @Steemitbloggers A.K.A. #PowerHouseCreatives really shone there!
I love how Steemians pull together for charities and to help folks in need. Having a Steem account has made it real easy to give!
When there was a fall off of folks from Steem because of difficulties after the Hardfork and the drop in STEEM price, I had no intention of leaving, it never entered my mind, for I had found something more rewarding than those STEEM, SBD and SP rewards for posting - it is the fellowship of my community members, the vision of possibilities that could come into fruition with the growth and coming together I was witnessing in the Steem world! And Heck! There is the permanent mark I'm making on the blockchain where folks can come to get to know me better and some of my posts could be the beginnings of my memoir or at least a record of my times! So I will continue to keep Steeming on and hope many more come to join us on this Steem journey!
This is a response to @zord189 contest put together for the @steemitbloggers A.K.A. #PowerHouseCreatives members. He asks...

I was lucky enough to be on boarded by someone who had already been on the platform for a little while to show me around. I had one advantage that person did not as I was into crypto years before without much success before I left that world and move onto other things. It’s always great to earn a little crypto here or there you never know what could end being a massive winner in the long run.
Communities make this platform everything without them we all just be a bunch of stranger on the internet. It is always interesting how the reasons we join something end up changing after we get a good look around. My first plans where to talk about crypto and some other stuff. I almost never did!
That was fortunate for you to cut down the learning curve! It is funny how it seems to bring out a different side of us when we start connecting with the wonderful folks in our communities for it is often a far different place then what we first imagined!
I love the way steem changes all of us, through engagement. $20 a day posting? LOL.... I await the return of those heady days! :)

Great to learn your entrance story.
And why you stayed ;)
I must check out HomesteadersCoop. Thanks for the reminder!
I met a guy in the jungle in Bali in 2016 who needed a drone when I had one. So, I spent the day with him while he used my drone and he ended up living in our community for two months, where he taught me all I needed to know. I call him my crypto angel ;)
Cool to have made that connection with your "crypto angel!
Thanks for sharing your journey on Steemit. So many great people on here that the crypto currency takes second place.
A great story here my friend and it clearly reflects you hear for the communities.
Many people forever moan and groan, but there is always a nucleus of soulful people about.
Blessings!
Awesome read, @porters! It's great sharing stories of how we got to be here. How many years have you been on Steem? I just looked at the price curve of Steem since it's conception, realizing that before I joined it had been at the current rate of around 25 cents for a loooong time. From this perspective it doesn't seem as disastrous.
As for the community part, I can only agree. That's what sets Steem apart from other coins, making me want to stay even if the price stays where it is. Likewise, even if it goes up to $5 I wouldn't power down. The social interaction is just worth so much more.

Hey @stortebeker! I just had my first year anniversary last month. How about you? It is wonderful to have these community connections of such wonderful people that mean so much more to me then the crypto but it is nice to have a piece of that too!
Oh, I've had my 2 year anniversary about two months ago!
You are still on time to be part of such a great journey. We all enjoying the ride. Regards!
I love this contest. It's fun to read other people's stories and discover how many are so recognizable :0)
After my initial idea of promoting my affiliate links - which was like the worst idea ever at that time - that was my second idea. I have truckloads of PLR content, sitting on my hard drive, being useless - lol
Amen to that! ;0)
What can I say about this, besides :>)
I totally relate to this. Those who are here just for the money, either leave as soon as they arrive or are probably not connecting at all, letting the bots do the work. Those - like you and me - who actually connect and find their tribes, receive so much more. Steemit has changed my life in ways that I could never have imagined, I wouldn't even dream of three years ago. Or perhaps I did, subconsciously ;>)
Um abraço
Yes, it really surprized me to find these wonderful connections and who would have ever figured we would gather for group meditations and such! Wonderful to have made this connection with you @vincentnijman!
Likewise!
It's pretty amazing indeed. The blockchain and especially Steemit and the people I've met on here/ the connections and friends I've made on here are seriously impacting my life in a pretty awesome way.
A hug from The Netherlands
Good to hear! It will sure be good to get our #mindfullife group meditations going again! Talk to you then if not before!
Great story
It is wonderful to find what complements us.
Thanks for sharing.
