The War on Vaping

in #politics6 years ago (edited)

The smoking of tobacco has seen a decline from the popularity it held at the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1950s and 60s, 40% of Americans smoked tobacco, while now that number has dropped to about 15%. Public health initiatives have demonstrated the ill-health of smoking, and people have listened to the science. Half of those who smoke get killed by their nasty habit, and most who don't stop are statistically of low-income and less educated.

One thing that helps smokers quit are electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) which vaporize nicotine. These are 95% less harmful than regular cigarettes. This could reduce deaths from smoking by 21% for people born after 1997 and not yet having smoked as long as previous generations. But the FDA had initiated a war of vaping in 2016 with the "Deeming Rule", where vaping products require a preapproval process that is expensive. Companies have to pay $330,000 and file 20 applications per product. Many companies couldn't comply with such ludicrous demands and stopped making products for consumers.

The New York City Council voted to reduce the number of vape shops in NYC in August 2017 and ban new shops from opening. Many vape shop owners are former smokers who stopped thanks to e-cigs and saved their health or lives as a result. Now they can't help offer the same products to others to get them to stop smoking tobacco. This also puts these entrepreneurs out of business and lets big tobacco keep making more profits while hurting more people.

A sham study from about how e-cigs had more formaldehyde than regular cigarettes seems to be the culprit behind much of these moves. But public memory is short and doesn't follow up on news stories. Vaping was seen as even more dangerous than cigarettes.

More than 2 million Americans have quit smoking thanks to vaping, while tobacco smoking is estimated to kill about 480,000 people each year in the U.S. There are many health benefits when you don't consume hundreds of toxins and dozens of carcinogens in regular cigarettes. Vaping should be a promoted alternative to tobacco smoking.

Rather than trying to reduce consumption of nicotine through very unhealthy cigarettes by allowing vaporizer smoking that is less unhealthy, some people want to stop nicotine smoking altogether. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is one such person who wants the FDA to start regulating the industry in the name of the children or adolescents who have an e-cig addiction.

To really get a nicotine free world, it would seem best to get people to switch to a better alternative to help them quit, no? This seems to just play into the hands of big tobacco, and not really help people get off of smoking. Kids can still get cigarettes that are worse if e-cigs are harder to get. It's better to not smoke anything, but it's better for teenagers to not smoke cigarettes. But who cares about that when you are out to control and spend "legally" stolen money called taxes in order to "fight" this new war.

A war on substances always works out for the best interest of the people, right? The drug war has gone so well, with so much money funneled into it. Of course the war on vaping isn't as harsh, but restricting its use keeps people smoking tobacco.

Do you smoke tobacco? If so, have you tried to switch to e-cigs? If not, you might want to consider it ;)

Recently, researchers from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, found the influence of 13 vape flavor against the development of lung cells. The effect lasts for 30 minutes to full day. There are at least 5 flavors, such as cinnamon, banana pudding, cola, vanilla, and menthol, have an impact on lung cells. When you consume it with high doses, this flavor can kill the normal cells. Some cells that have been affected by this taste effect can not be reproduced by the body at normal levels.

In the United States, the ingredients of the flavor get FEMA GRATSM status - meaning they are safe for use in food. But it turns out the status is a mistake, the fact is safe to eat. However, when you are vaping, you do not eat it instead, but inhale it?

For example, diacetyl is a chemical flavoring agent used for food production such as popcorn, caramel, and various dairy products. Diacetyl is also found in the taste of electric cigarettes. Did you know that the substance can cause serious lung disease?

Yes, it turns out you should be careful with the type of taste of electric cigarette. Not only have an impact on the lungs, the use of nicotine in large quantities can lead to potential poisoning. Symptoms of nicotine intoxication can be nausea and vomiting. In severe cases, the user will experience seizures and respiratory depression. Of course, acute poisoning can also cause death.

Yes, inhaling is different from eating. Inhaling smoke is not good for the lungs. I don't agree with incense either. Smoke doesn't belong in the lungs. "Vape" is a finer smoke, not a water vaper as the name suggests. It's just finer smoke, but still smoke from heat applies to material. People should be careful for sure. Thanks for the feedback.

Great info thanks. I always get diacetyl flavors when I make my juice, also my making my own I have total control over the amount of nicotine. I started at 12mg now I am at 1mg. Soon I will totally kick the habit!!

I've quit smoking 3 times with ecigs, recommend them highly enought. The reason I've relasped so many times is because I drink too much and when your ecig runs out of battery or you you run out of Ejuice its too hard to get buy ejuice at night and too easy to buy a pack of cigarettes.

Tobacco companies fund most of the research organizations out there. These institutes spit out the returns there masters want. Sad truth is, we will never know what really is the truth. Best thing is to give up smoking all together.

Yes, smoke into the lungs is not what they like... that's obvious. Even if its finer smoke called through the misnomer "vapor" which isn't vapor like water, it's a finer smoke.

I really should stop but to be honest, recently I was in the company of two vapers who smoked in the courtyard and its secondary smoke is much worse. I mean, my unit still smells like a secondhand peach potpourri. Although, obviously, vaping is much more social and sharing an experience.

Snark aside, this is obviously the tobacco lobby at work. Just like the tobacco lobby has managed to outlaw governments in less developed nations have outlawed nicotine patches. There just is too much in play for them and no matter what happens, they still have lungs to conquer.

Just check out some of Lucky Strike’s expansion methods in less developed markets in Africa. Scrupulous is too nice a term.

they still have lungs to conquer.

LOL. The new conquistador :P

Unfortunately, this kind of practise is endemic in our current 'free market' society, and not just limited to tobacco, although I won't veer too far off into a tangent. Becoming certified as an organic farmer is another shill operation, where many reputable growers simply can't afford the certification costs.

Tobacco though; I'm an ex-smoker myself. I quit 4 years ago properly now, but had also quit 2 times previous to that over a ten year stint in total. Vapes weren't available the couple of times. But I decided to forgo them on my last withdrawal. I saw it as dragging the process out. Sure, the process was harder, but the fact it was hard fought for allowed me to really cement the change.

Still, I recognise the importance of these devices in today's fast paced world to cushion the blow, as it were. Nicotine withdrawal is no joke, and even if you're unable able to quit in the short-term, obviously, you're negating a large portion of the negative impact real cigarettes have.

Dos-heartening as it is, I think we'll continue to see 'legislation' like this until there is a dramatic restructuring of our governmental system from top to bottom.

We will only ever be spoon fed enough technology, resources and hope to keep us coming back for more whilst the 'one party' corporate government has us in its grasp...

Glad you battled through and kicked the bad habit without prolonging it with vaping, as you said ;)

I was a smoker for 15 years and I have been vaping for 4. Vaping doesn’t effect my breathing like cigs did. I also feel a ton better and the cravings aren’t even close to as bad.
What is so awesome about vaping, is being able to make your own juice, just the way you like it😉
It seems that everytime a better alternative comes out that isn’t inline with ‘their’ money making, people poisoning, we know what is best for you scheme. They demonize it and use false science to attempt to persuade people or rather brainwash them.
Just my .02

I really enjoy coming home and seeing and article from you in my feed. Thank for the hard work you put into these posts.
Cheers👍🏻👍🏻

You're welcome ;) Glad you gained value from it. It's good that vaping is better, I hope you can kick the habit completely, as any type of smoke in the lungs isn't a positive thing for them. Another commenter has some data about vaping issues as well.

I’m working towards it 👍🏻 It’s become more of a habit than a full blown addiction. I can go for hours and hours without it. But when it’s there, that’s another story 😉
Soon I plan on ditching it when I’m at work. That’s 10hrs a Day.
I will check it out thanks.

damn i have to kill my zigarettes -.-

I did. E-cigs is what got me to quit tobacco completely. It was convenient to be able to taper down the nicotine concentration. I started from a 12mg/ml until I was all the way down to 0mg/ml. Then I spent a month or two using the 0. I found I was actually more addicted to the act of "smoking" or "vaping" than the nicotine itself...

Yes, smoking itself is addicting somewhat as a sensation or habit... aside from any chemicals, no matter what you smoke.

While I don't smoke and I think cigarette smoking is really gross, vaping and the popcorn lung situation is pretty serious to me. It's like COPD on steroids. I also don't like that you can't smell it in a bunch of them unless they are flavored (from my experience at least, again I don't vape or smoke). I do see it as an improvement over cigarettes of course though.

Popcorn lung situation?

Do you smoke tobacco? If so, have you tried to switch to e-cigs?

I have never smoke anything in my life (just one normal cigarette at a party years ago to give it a try, and didn't like it). But I have family members who are addicted and they have tried to stop it, but it is too difficult for them and they have keep smoking and destroying their health.

Do you smoke @krnel ? :P

I have, cigarettes suck and taste bad, I did it for social reasons ;) At least weed gets you high :P

Vaping is the best thing that happened to health in the last years. It probably is not safe, but it does help most people to quit cigarettes. Been smoking for 10 years, vaping for half a year and completely clean now. For many of my friends its the same. Form 7 smokers 1 quit the hard way, 4 quit by vaping and now rarely even vape and 2 are still smoking.

Yup, safer, but not safe completely ;) Congrats on being clean :)
