Reading between the lines: the importance of South Korea's media censorship on North Korea news
Maybe you've heard how north korean leader Kim Jong-un has gone viral on South's social media.
South koreans thought North's leader is friendly, as stated by The New York Times. Most of them have never even seen him before because northern news are heavily censored. You can get punished for infringing this.
There's no mystery to it. A naive population fostered by good governance couldn't easily see through treacherous tactics of cultural influence and covering up twisted ideologies. It's not paranoical to think there are spies and other infiltrated influencers here and there. In this modern, connected world made of opinions, this is just common tactics.
"No, it's not that bad over there, they even all get good treatment. This bad thing that happened to you wouldn't have started if we were the same as them." You can turn this vague statement into anything convenient to you and put a lot of make up on it. People don't often do their due dilligence.
So it makes a lot of sense to block any pro-North websites and general media because all it takes for a dictatorship sound like a good idea is finding problems in the current government and lying about the cons of being ruled with an iron fist.
