Wspomniałem już kiedyś, że przyjeżdżających do Lublina pociągiem witają Tania Odzież i żule. Okolice dworca kolejowego mają wciąż ten niepowtarzalny klimat wschodu - kamienice się sypią, w ciemnych klatkach schodowych graffiti pisane markerem, smród tanich fajek i puste butelki po piwie. Tam jeszcze można spotkać prawilnych osobników, dla których słowiański przykuc to najwygodniejsza pozycja oczekiwania na autobus. Obrazu dopełnia iście ruski bazar; pogięte stelaże namiotów i jarmark osobliwości.

I have already mentioned that people coming to Lublin by train are greeted by Thrift Shop and some hobos. The surroundings of the railway station still have that unique atmosphere of East - tenement houses are crumbling, marker-written graffiti on dark stairwells, stench of cheap cigs and empty beer bottles. There you can still meet proper individuals, for whom "slavic squat" is the most comfortable position to wait for the bus. The picture is complemented by a truly eastern bazaar; bent tent frames and vendors of (almost) anything imaginable.

Zacieśniający się pierścień gentryfikacji nie dotarł jeszcze do uliczek sąsiadujących z dworcem. Bramy i tanie speluny wciąż znajdują się w rękach "władców wschodu". Wewnątrz dziedzińców tychże kamienic czas płynie znacznie wolniej. Stagnacja i bieda działa na korzyść starych budynków. Ludzie bowiem w zdecydowanej większości dążą do poprawy swoich warunków życiowych. Nikt, kto ma pieniądze nie zostawi nieszczelnego drewnianego okna, skrzypiących schodów, starego balkonu w imię tradycji. Trudno winić ludzi za to, że chcą tego co tańsze, lepsze, wygodniejsze. Szkoda tylko, że w polskim budownictwie "rozwój teraz, tradycja potem" zmienia się w "rozwój teraz, tradycja nigdy".

Tightening ring of gentrification has not reached the streets neighbouring the station yet. Gates and sleazy bars are still in the hands of the "Lords the East". Inside the courtyards of these tenement houses time passes much slower. Stagnation and poverty work in favour of old buildings. People in the vast majority want to improve their living conditions. No one with money will leave a porous wooden window, creaking stairs, or an old balcony in the name of tradition. It' hard to blame people for wanting the cheaper, better and more comfortable. Pity, however, that in the Polish contemporary architecture "progress now, heritage later" turns into " progress now, heritage never".

Kilkaset metrów od dworca kolejowego znajduje się Dworzec Autobusowy Wschód. Tam rozpoczynają swoje trasy busy jadące w kierunku południowo-wschodnim: Zamość, Biłgoraj, Hrubieszów. Dworzec wygląda jak żywcem wyjęty z lat '90. Rdzewiejąca hala dworcowa zajęta przez "Tanią Odzież", upiorna toaleta i błotnista nawierzchnia placu manewrowego. To tam jednak włodarze miasta planują wybudować nowy dworzec autobusowy, łącząc znajdujący się blisko starego miasta dworzec główny z dworcem wschodnim i tym samym, komunikację autobusową z koleją. Póki co jednak, turystów przybywających do miasta wita powiew Wschodu, niosący się z miasta na styku kultur, światów i dziesięcioleci.

A few hundred metres from the train station there is the Eastern Bus Station. This is where the buses going to the south-east begin their routes: Zamość, Biłgoraj, Hrubieszów. The station looks like it was taken out of the 90's. Rusty waiting room now occupied by Thrift Shop, spooky public toilet and muddy surface of the manoeuvring area. It is there, however, where the city's governors plan to build a new bus station, connecting the main station located near the old town with the eastern station and thus, bus transport with the railways. For the time being, though, tourists arriving in the city are greeted by the atmosphere of the East, coming from the city at the meeting point of cultures, worlds and decades.
