Poetry Dice Entry: The Shearing

in #poetrydice7 years ago (edited)

The Shearing

Every night I sleep
amongst wolves dressed as sheep,
shivering, not because I feel cold,
but because I am terrified.

Midnight Eureka!
An apple lands
on my Isaac Newton within.

Eyeing the fence,
I run towards it
and take a leap:
rolling the dice;
ready for my lucky streak.

Next morning, I won't be wondering
about the shepherd's shaking knees
while he points his cane
to count his flock.

Tomorrow, I will be the fleeceless stray
chasing rainbows until dusk.
When the moon beams,
I will rest on lush grass, wondering:
Am I too wise to be a sheep?

This entry was for the contest Poetry Dice Challenge 3000, Week 25. This was yet again an amazing opportunity to leave my comfort zone and think outside the box.

Edit: I have posted a video where I recite this poem. The original video post is [Spoken Word Poem #5: The Shearing]. You can also watch the video here:

The wondering at imminent transformation, I can get behind. This is a superb entry. Thank you for your time and contribution!

Thank you! It's my pleasure, and I will be coming for the prize (one week or another, eventually it will be mine!)

I liked the way this story flowed within the poem. I like that the theme of transformation was undertaken with out actually using the word. Good write.

Thank you! Flow is one of the toughest challenges for poems in this contest (at least, from my last try it was difficult to find the flow). There's an unspoken power in the implicit imagery/themes.

Great entry for this week! I was looking at those dice and they looked a wee bit challenging.
You did well working transformation in without blatantly saying it! Something I myself need to work on :D

Next up! Tri-o-let

Last week it was challenging and I spent minutes trying to plan a 'story-line'. It worked, but it didn't. This time I just started writing and looked at the prompts to keep prompting me as I go and went with it. Glad it worked out :D

i enjoy the title and the way you worked it into your piece, Jeremy, or the way the piece worked itself into the title.

i must say, i find the dice rolling metaphor in a dice rolling contest entry quite meta as well, good fun had by all.hope your sheep doesn't encounter a scapegoat whilst out flexing their new freedom!

thank you for sharing, good sir.

thank you for the comment. The contest can be quite 'random' - dice was one of the image prompts! I have been challenging myself to let my poetry have some quirkiness and strangeness. It doesn't have to be always so structured. Well, I hope the scapegoat doesn't find my sheep, or it better run!

It's always fun, and healthy, to interject some quirkiness into your writing!

Ohhhh, man, I love this!
Every night I sleep
amongst wolves dressed as sheep

and
I will rest on lush grass, wondering:
Am I too wise to be a sheep?

Fantastic!

Thank you!! You mean, I started and ended a poem on great lines?? That makes me quite happy :D

The flow is quite electrifying ..Hey, you were really pointing at me! More please

I really liked the poem, but I loved that you added a video of you reading it. Well done!

thank you :) because of the editing and recording a video 10 times before I do it well, I only do these videos once a week, but I am glad that at least someone liked it ;)

Really nice work... I've been reading these from the bottom up so yours in one of the last to read... it's so cool how different each one has been even though we're all working with the same prompts... very inspiring!

Love the writing community here and glad you have recently joined it too just like me!

Let's keep it alive by continuing to participate... thanks for sharing this... also the links to the discord groups are very useful. Thank you!

Congratulations! You have been chosen as the sole winner of the Week 25 contest! You will receive 5 SBD! Thanks again for your amazing poem entry! Cheers! Hope to see you again this week!

I clapped so hard that my hands are hurting!! Thank you for that hahaha. Having read some other entries, I was not expecting to be the winner, so huge thank you! It was really fun, and I will definitely keep on entering. The contest is so innovative and creative; even entering is a prize on its own.
