Intimate Strangers & Immigrants—Writers Block Poetry Contest Week 5

in #poetry6 years ago

This poem is in response to @thewritersblock's Writing Prompt:

"Write a poem in two sections about two completely different things. Have the title link both items somehow."

Intimate Strangers & Immigrants

I.
Sudden intimacies between unknowns
singular looks that affect us strangely:

the mute cries of souls in distress
glimpses into houses in disarray

searching, imploring regards
of existential curiosity

wells deep and guileless
clear to their very depths

or eyes untrained and unguarded
transmitting unbridled yearning
measuring our distances

like twin stray stars
lost in some inner space
flashing an eerie light.

II.
Imagine, if we stopped migrating birds at the border...
Said, No, this stretch of sky, sea and land is out of order
Can you perch somewhere else, please?
Perhaps, in your native trees?

This hit me hard. A very soulful poem which can be applied in the present. Beautifully done. I can see the passion in your works. Thank you so much for sharing @yahialababidi. I look forward to more posts like this.

Many thanks, for your close reading and following my work. You’ll see that I have, recently, posted meditations on immigration and the price we pay when we forget our connectedness to one another. Grateful for your attention and kind words, @reewritesthings 🙏🏼

You're very much welcome.

You brought the title AND the image together into one piece. That was truly amazing. Nice job!

Thanks, for noticing—I wanted it to be subtle & migrating birds seemed to do the trick :) Glad you enjoyed it & grateful for your encouragement 🙏🏼

Ooooh, I like the little bite of political satire you threw in to the second poem. Awesome stuff man.

Thanks, man, I couldn't resist... What started off as a poem about intimate glances between strangers, veered off to birds (they're never too far from my mind). This gave me occasion to reflect on the fact that there are no strangers, all living things are connected & should be free to roam our green & blue planet!
