Icy Breaths (Original Poem)
Let us exchange the exhale
between burgundy sheets of memory.
The air is Toledo cold
and your room has no carpet yet.
That ache you feel is January
when the Lasts will come.
Panera conversations grow stale
after Halloween lessons
and unwatched Apatow.
Fiction and dress up
are all I ever claimed it to be,
but the heat was real for you.
Every fingertip held a furnace.
You believed in an alchemy
that could melt concrete
into something more than sand.
You wanted a world
where the balloons were tame.
But, I could not build foundations
from ash, or warm from the chill.
Which leaves us the inhale,
the next breath on distant air.
Conversations like stale sushi.
Pillowcases stained with painted reminders
Our mistakes become mirrored
because broken hearts are falling dominoes.
Left with few options,
we keep breathing.
Notes: A very personal poem about a relationship that didn't quite last. I tried to infuse it with as many real memories and moments that described the short-lived and ultimately doomed relationship. Its fascinating re-reading and seeing some of the metaphors I invoked. It was a great re-read and I hope you enjoyed.

Glad you enjoyed. Yea, it can get pretty frigid in Northern Ohio, especially with the lake effect.
I figure the footer is a small attempt to combat the fact that Steemit doesn't have great content-discovery tools. So, I figured I'd help people along :)
It really doesn't have very good discovery tools. I live in Northeast Ohio and it gets pretty chilly around here as well, although this past winter it felt warmer in December, January and February than March and April.
Great work, hope to see more.
