Hey, Sister!

Sis, you are ahead of me a couple of years,
You were born on a month when heavy rain comes near;
It's the time when the rice field needs a plow,
A time when the field goes gray for the farmers to sow.

You grew up in a place where neighbours are cheerful,
Where people wake up before the sun rises in full,
Where people take a nap in their swaying cradle;
Where before dusk, they can finish the job they handle.

Your childhood memories are full of happiness,
In your innocent mind there's freedom to express
Anything you have to say brings togetherness
To the family you grew up with-- full of kindness.

I knew, in school your life didn't come so easy,
No one can teach you in full, your head feels dizzy;
But your mind is steadfast, giving up-- not an option,
"I have to do it by myself," your strong conviction!

Your style of learning did not just rest to yourself,
You showed it to me and apply it for myself;
I remember you said, "You do it by your own,
Oh, li'l brother, I'll feed you not with my own spoon"!

At first, I didn't get why you have to be "cruel"
To your li'l brother who feels like in a duel,
It seems you alone plans to win the battle
And leave you poor brother's heart in awe and struggle.

This perspective has changed now that I am an adult,
I realize the "food" you fed does not always taste like salt;
Spoon feeding is never your teaching plan,
To make your li'l brother become a better man!

The love and care you showed to your brother
Is not the usual bond I can see with others
I seldom hear from you the words, "I love you!"
But it mostly brings tears of joy when you say so.

Your sacrifices for me, I can recall in my head,
In which lately I realized that I'm so blessed
To have a sister who seems to be cruel
outside;
But love and care rein in her soft heart inside!

That's why with all my heart to you I admire,
You're an inspiration with the things I aspire;
This I promise you without a stain of a lie,
This body will love and protect you until the day I die!
