POEM: Snowy Thoughts

in #poetry5 years ago (edited)

winter

line

My window frames a soft painting
In shades of grey and green and brown,
Tree bows weighed down
By the cold, fluffy presence of water.

Water that will melt and flow
When Spring finally sneaks in,
Many weeks from now, to claim
Her place on the wheel of time.

But she slumbers under
The blanket of quiet that comes
In Winter’s white rest,
The lake sleepy beneath its ice.

Clouds cloak the sky, a lazy
Ceiling of floating vapor,
Crystalized and released
To decorate the waiting world.

Beneath the earth-warmed ground
Roots and seeds and creatures await,
Biding their time like thoughts
Seeking the perfect season to grow.

I seem to be communicating best in poetry lately. I even did a few submissions this week to magazines that publish poetry, which is a good thing for my writerly ambitions.

Even if none of the submissions are accepted, the act of getting my work out there is an important one. If I don’t do submissions, there is zero chance of being published to a wider audience with the credits that come with professional publications. Also, I expect rejections from magazines won’t sting as much as rejections from literary agents, considering poems take mere hours to write (even if those hours are spread out over years, in the case of some revisions), whereas manuscripts take months or years of painstaking dedication.

I've been working on my manuscripts, too, all good news in the writing department.

Always, I’m very aware of the slow cycles of nature—the nuances within the seasons, the course of the moon, and the ways I am interconnected to this beautiful planet.

When you get quiet and listen, nature has so much to teach us.

Thank you for reading!

Peace. @katrina-ariel

First the poem. It's a terrific expression of the potential of winter that most people just don't see. They see the work and bother of the weather but not what it means to the earth and the creatures of. I'll admit to not seeing the potential when I had a 10' drift in front of my door :)

Now the submissions: I'm really glad to see you doing that. The rejections sting but you can know they are not rejecting you but only the piece you wrote. They simply do not have the power to reject you. Ever.

And the very best rejections will have editorial suggestions. Often rejections come because of editorial needs that writers just don't know (our entire issue is celebrating spring. We don't need another winter submission. Try again in 9 months.)

Always good to see you here. Thanks for sharing a terrific poem.

Super sweet comment, Tom, thank you. Yes, the beauty of winter is kinda relative to the amount of suffering you're experiencing along with that beauty. ;) But it is a gorgeous time of year, as nature is always shining in one way or another. As for the submissions, thank you. It's an ongoing thing and I needed to get back into the swing of things. :)

"When you get quiet and listen, nature has so much to teach us."

It sure does, my friend, it has many lessons no doubt. One of them is how to live on earth in harmony? Something we humans don't really know how to do jet. And, jet, we call ourselves "INTELLIGENT."

That was a beautiful poem, I enjoyed reading it. I hope you soon get your big break and get published. Until then, keep working, and sharing. Your day will come. :)

Thank you for sharing it with us. Have an amazing day. :)

Thank you so much! Yes, nature can teach us harmony. I hope humans as a species come around to that.

I sure hope so for our own sake. :)

I often write about winter, how can I not when our winters are nearly 8 months long!!!

Your poem is lovely and serene and lends a sense of calm! You are so right, nature has much to teach us.

If your communication needs to come out in poetry, then let it flow 💖

Thank you, yes, poetry helps me process, for sure. And winter, omg Canadian winter! LOL! ;) Keep going, we're closer to spring than we think.

I can so relate!

I may have told you this before, but in the 90s, when I decided to take a short nonfiction class to document the damage I was seeing in the Florida Keys, my brain decided to switch onto lyric poetry mode, lol!

And I still find that I often "think" best in poetry, particularly when a subject is particularly near and dear to my heart, which goes right back to being an empath.

Perhaps a means of buffering against the pain, at least for me.

In any case, I love your poem. ;-)

YES!!! Poetry as a means to buffer the intensity of empathy, OMG that! As for sliding into poetry mode when trying to focus on nonfiction, that couldn't have been an easy way to go through that class. lol!

It actually struck me as pretty funny at the time, as it did several of the class members, so it provided us with some comic relief.

Even more, I found that writing a poem on a given topic focused my attention enough to make the nonfiction that followed much easier.

So, in the end, my poetry and prose fed one another in a way that benefited both.

Simply loved this...

You are so right about nature; much like signs...everywhere if you look. You vibrate with quite a positive energy, and I look forward to seeing more of your poems and creations...

Love and light...
