LONELINESS / The Need to Have People in Your Life

in #poetry8 years ago (edited)

After a Week in Florida

My wife and I went to Florida last week. We always enjoy the beach and warm weather and especially like watching other people. We were taken by the number of people having fun; especially the old people acting like kids and cutting up at the bar or walking hand in hand on the beach. We also found it sad to see so many old people who were living alone, some desperate to make new friends or find someone to share the rest of their life with.

It is this later group of people, the lonely, that serve as the inspiration for today's poem.

When the World is Aligned We Try to Find Meaning

Note:

This is a photograph I took last week in Florida then manipulated in Adobe Illustrator.

Near the End of His Horizon

The sun sprays citrus cologne,
stings the raw blue
of a clean shaven sky.

Having drifted for weeks
a tired old flip-flop
rests near the tide line.

Seagulls face into the wind,
their black weeping eyes
read a lonely man’s sorrow.

A wave washes over his feet.
The sun disappears
in a five o’clock shadow.

You're like the Stephen Crane of holiday trips, and it's very enjoyable for me as your audience. Thanks for the consistently beautiful work.

The very first line already got me! Brilliant, thank you. You are a great artist!

"a tired old flip-flop" - ouch: getting old in the twenty-first century, like plastic footwear. A wonderful poem.

Thanks Richard, glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for being a good proof reader.

I've just used this line as a title for a post about reading and writing: https://steemit.com/writing/@richardjuckes/a-tired-old-flip-flop-thinking-about-poems
