Venice - a shrinking city
Everyday life in Venice is specific for many things and transportation is one of it. The whole city was built on 120 islands which are connect with more than four hundred bridges. Traffic is regulated by gondole, boats, public transport (a kind of ship called vaporetto) and water taxis. Almost every form of transport is on water or on foot.
Gondole are symbol of Venice. You can see it on all three images but best on the second one. Gondola is a long boat with asymmetric shape. It is operated by standing on its end, with a single lengthy oar and rudder.
Gondoliers have specific clothes: a white hat and shirt with black and white lines. They are also well known by their songs. In the past, gondolas were used for fishing but nowadays just as a touristic attraction and for some ceremonies.
Water gives the unique charm to the city but it is also its biggest enemy. In the 20th century, Venice subsided for 120 mm and at the same time a sea level rise of for another 110 mm. Also, Venice flood about 100 times a year due to bad weather and high tides.
