Photography: Inside the Public Market in Pécs, Hungary
As I am a traveling software engineer, I am traveling.
For work, this month I spent one week in New York city, followed by one week in Paris. Of course, in France I also met three of my seven brothers.
From Paris, I flew to Hungary where I'll stay for three week, with my wife. Next Friday, it is her birthday: she will be sixty.
We are visiting her family, mostly in Pécs, the third biggest city in Hungary, near the Croatian border.
Today, we went to the public market, in the city center.
As you can see, this is mostly a place to buy food: fruits, vegetables, meat, from local producers. There is no fish at the public market, as there no commercial fishermen.
You can also buy food that are ready to eat ...
... and eat it right there.
Not your typical North American food court, right?
Here is my wife in front of a bakery Aranycipó (golden bread) that sells real bread, not just the soft sliced bread that can be found everywhere in North America.
She is carrying carrots and a cauliflower of 2 kg that we just bought. The cauliflower cost us only the equivalent of US$1.80.
This guy is selling cured meets, mostly pork. Hungarians eat mostly pork and chicken. Beef is a luxury here.
A last view of the market.
All pictures taken with my phone Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
I am soooo envious of you. Hungary is a wonderful place and the 10 days my family and I spent in Budapest where the best holiday ever. The Market Square there is similar, but with a much larger selection of both foods and touristy items. Fresh, wholesome food is very affordable compared to what North Americans are used to. Hungary has worked very hard to maintain the health of its agriculture.
Yes, Hungary is an interesting country.
It looks to me as a mix between modern life in France or North America and what I remember of France during the 1950s.
The market in Saint-Ouen in France in the 50s looked very similar to this one, but more noisy as many merchants were shouting the qualities of their wares!
Wonderful pics!
Glad to see how different things are! :)
That cauliflower at $1.80 costs about 50 cents here. And yet my mom still complains. :)
50 cents for a 2 kg cauliflower? That is indeed a good price!
Thank you for your comment.
Yep! Very cheap here, you know.
For 20 cents, bought 1 KG of tomatoes.
For 25 cents, 1 KG of onion.
Price do fluctuate, yet it's fairly cheaper compared to the rest of the world. :)
Nice busy market over there, everything looks really fresh
Hope you enjoyed yourself!
Oh, yes, I do enjoy myself, thank you.
had you not written Hungary I would think - Cubao market in my country haha
looks a bit similar
