"OLD BARN № 001" ~ © Tiffany E. Reed

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

The area where I live is rather rural, as the nearest town only has a population of 3,000 people. It irks me, somewhat, to hear people say they live in a "small town" when the stats list populations like 15,000-20,000 people or more, as it is obvious they have NO clue what a "small town" really is! Anyway, I digress...

Driving the roads through the countryside will take the traveler past many barns. Some of them are newish and modern-looking, but most show the beautiful weathered-wood of years of use in the elements. I call them all "old" barns, and have enjoyed making photographs of them over the past few years. I call that my "Old Barn Project," and even though it has over three-hundred barns in it, there are still plenty more to photograph in this county, alone!

This barn is only a couple of miles from the house, and I pass it frequently when I take our household recycling and garbage to the nearest landfill transfer station. It was this beauty that inspired me to start the Old Barn Project, so it has the distinction of being № 001 on the list. 😊

Very cool old barn. You are right about "small town", I live in an unincorporated area of the county. Forty years ago there wasn't much out here except farms and small grocery store with gas pumps. Today the farms are now subdivisions, the main roads are 4 and 6 lanes. The school district has 6 high schools, 8 junior high schools and 32 elementary schools.
When my father in-law passes away we will be moving from the area and heading to the type of town that barn picture represents, he's the only reason we have stayed this long.

It's a shame that such a nice farming community grew like that. A little change/growth once-in-a-while is good, but that sounds excessive. neutral_face.gif

That happens when you are close to a big city like Houston, but in 1856 when my wife's family settled here it was way out in nowhere.
