Cool Trains at the Northern Nevada Railway Museum
I stopped in at Northern Nevada Railway Museum and found the most interesting site was the Machine Shop. This is where they have all the cool trains. They also have steam train rides, but to get up and close to these monsters, you need to check out the Machine Shop. Here there are working Steam engines along with some other trains. These are all functional except for the ones that they are rebuilding.
Notice the steam coming out of this one? The crew was firing the boiler and getting it ready to go for a train trip. It takes about 6 hours for the boiler to get hot and ready to go using coal. Many working steam trains use oil in the boiler and only takes about an hour to get ready, but that wouldn't be authentic. Here they were running coal.
This steam engine is almost ready to go and the crew is making the final touches.
They also have very early diesel engines. And yes, they work.
This is a working 100 TON steam crane.
Here is a functioning snow removal train
If there is a train in here that is not functional, it is being rebuilt.
Every 15 years, these steam engines need to be completely torn down and rebuilt.

Nothing compares to a trip on a locomotive, even a special smell, let it be a rarity but forever alive
They allow you to ride with the engineer and shovel coal into the boiler. You will have to book well in advance.
I love journey to train.
Train journey is the most Saif journey.
