Fieldwork, geology photos from Antarctica #1
Antarctica!
I feel privileged to have been to Antarctica. Hopefully these photos, taken from in the field, doing fieldwork in the middle of the most remote continent on Earth gets some love from people here! The Glaciers and mountains here are not to be missed. Go if you ever get the chance!
Can you see the people working???
Yes this is for geologic fieldwork, mapping in one of the coolest (pardon the pun) places on the planet. Trying to figure out the depositional history of the area, where did the sediments come from?
Where did the boulders come from? How long ago did this happen? How did the glaciers change in size and volume during the past few 100,000 years? Big picture stuff.
Note the tools of the trade (makes a nice scale as well in the photos) and beautiful intrusive rocks:
Fun to sample, but bag starts getting heavy to carry back to camp...
How cold do you think it was? Upvotes for the best guesses! Thanks for your interest.

-11° F. is my guess.
It looks warm :-)
Must of been really exciting to be there, what
part of Antarctica was this?
Did you find any fossils? I've seen some tree
fossils and a petrified seal on different shows.
Gave you a vote also on @czechglobalhosts!
Wherever we go our rock bag always gets
heavy also 💎
Awesome post @snowyknight!
Hey @shasta! Thanks for stopping by!
Here is where we were, more or less. I made this in Google Earth but images are copyright Google...
We did find some fossils too! Seals! Perhaps I should post those in part 2?
Glad to hear your rock bags also feel heavy by the end of the day. Your guess regarding temps is accurate... it was "warm" that day... Thanks again for your interest!!
PS. Thanks for the upvote as well! Oceans tend to dominate so hard for Antarctica to get coverage! Thanks!
So jealous! Antarctica's on my list to visit someday, but it's a ways off.
You are on the path towards your dreams @mountainwashere. Study hard and get that degree. I hope to go back so when you are closer to your goal, lets talk! Hope to go to Vinson the next time! Thanks for your support!
Thanks, bud!
Wow, seems like you have been to a few cool places. I was already envious of your Patagonia trip but this beats it.
Purely amazing!
Thanks @sooflaschig! I have, sadly my carbon footprint is really bad. Patagonia is radical but Antarctica is another level (much more challenging too). Drop a line when you head to Patagonia, I'll give you some tips if your keen.
Hawaii eruption is wild too hey? Cheers!
I will keep you in mind if I really should ever make it there :)
Hawaii is nuts. It is really amusing that people are apparently misinterpreting the extend of the eruption. I had conversations with people today, who just realized that the actual eruption sites only cover a tiny part of the Big Island. Don't know what they expected.
And I think it is incredible what huge damage even those (apparently small) eruptions can cause.
Agreed. Glad to be able to see it with better technology (HD video, etc) that was not available during the last eruption there. Sad to hear lots of people are canceling tourist trips etc because of misunderstandings.
Word on the street is that insurance for lava damage (i.e. fire) was not issued after the last big eruption there so sad to see property lost. Pele taking back from the power of the mantle plume...
I don't think you did a supervolcano blog yet @sooflauschig but that would be a cool one (to contrast with this eruption) to look into! Yellowstone, Taupo, etc. Cheers!

Thank you Geopolis! I would like to join and will look into it! Thanks for your support and glad you enjoyed it.
PS. I just sent my transfer over to join your group. Thanks!
Been following you. Amazed at your travels! Hope you can help with a rock ID. Any suggestions?
Hello! Thanks for your interest and great photos! To me it looks like you have some forms of copper ores (but tough to say 100% from the photos).
Did you find these in a copper producing region?
A great place to compare your photos is here:

For me looks like Dioptase at the top and perhaps Malachite in the bottom two of your photos. Enjoy and thanks for your interest. What do you think?
Thanks for the link! I'll check it out! Rosasite and Brochantite have been suggested as well as calcite on conichalcite from Ojuela mine, Mapimi,Mexico, matrix-limonite. Uraninite was another but the mineral the green is formed on is not the same as the pics I've seen of Uraninite.
No worries. Hope it helps some. Perhaps some of your prior recommendations are right but Cu is likely part of the mix...
CU?
Sorry, geeking out too much this week.
Copper (Cu). Cheers!
Hey np! Geeking out is cool!!
Agreed! Looking forward to your next post, I resteemed but cannot participate in your competition, but awesome photos! :)
PS. to confirm @luanne, these samples are 100% from Ojuela mine, Mapimi in Mexico?
That place is famous! Someone should write up a post on that, historical, interesting and world class...
Thanks!
I don't know if my sample is from there. That's just what someone was suggesting my rock was based on their knowledge. I dunno anything about that mine/location.
I just googled it (Ojuela), it looks awesome! Would love to visit there sometime and take some photos!
Now I'm gonna have to Google it! Lol
