A very common mistake in photography...

That such steemians I hope are doing very well, today I bring you an analysis I did about an image I took a long time ago and I want to share with you my point of view about this very common mistake, in those of us who start in photography (even those who have a lot of experience) and who often go unnoticed, very often.

From time to time I look at my older works, in order to analyze my own mistakes in order to improve every day more, this time while I was dusting off my old photo albums, I came across this picture I took about 5 years ago, for a university job, at the José Antonio Anzoátegui football stadium.

In this picture I tried to make a combination of different composition techniques, such as:

  • Macro photography.
  • Depth of field.
  • Symmetry.
  • Law of the horizon.

These were my points, with which I tried to create the composition of my image and you will ask yourself: How can I think about depth of field, if I am doing macro photography? Yes, both of them are present in my photo, since you can see enough blurring to focus the eye's attention on the part of the grating that I wanted, but at the same time, symmetrical lines are observed that go to the bottom of the photo, achieving a depth of field soft to the eye, creating a curious effect which manages to attract attention.

In this way, I was able to correctly capture these two techniques in a single photo, but now let's move on to the point we're coming to, that's the "law of the horizon".

And what is this law about? Well, it says, that when portraying a landscape or any situation in which our eye perceives a horizon in the image, it must be guided by the 3-thirds rule and the horizon must be placed in the lower or upper 3-thirds, The same applies if the image is taken vertically, and the horizon must be level between both ends.

It should not be tilted, unless it is a Dutch plane, which is used in more specific situations, my mistake in this case was that, I placed the horizon of my inclined image, which breaks a little the aesthetics and the message of the same one, in addition I placed the horizon in the superior thirds, which while not bad, since it still complies with the law, gives a more closed environment to the photo which did not look very good with the lively atmosphere that made that day, as it takes it at a counter-picked angle (from bottom to top) plus a light blue sky, completely clear.

If you had taken the picture by placing the horizon in the lower thirds ( and with the horizon straight) I was able to achieve that feeling of freedom and of going upwards that I loved so much, so I think it's important to look back from time to time to see where we've failed, to analyze what we have done, to learn from what we have lived and to move forward, is how we will be able to grow and improve daily.
