Butterflies know what colour they are!
The butterflies pictured below are quite extraordinary! When their wings are closed they look exactly like dead leaves on the jungle floor. Not so amazing you may think - many creatures are camouflaged into their surroundings. It is a well known fact.
So to take it one step further - these two butterflies below are different colours but clearly the same family from the wing shape and design they share. However one is orange and the other is silver and dark brown.
It is clear they know what colour they are from the colour of the leaves they land on. The orange butterfly has landed on an orange leaf and the silver and dark brown butterfly on a silver leaf that creates bands of dark brown shade in between them. Which in itself is accidental colour but the butterfly is clouded knowing the colour of itself and the shadows caused by the silver leaves!!
Nature really is quite mind-blowing!
These images are captured from a video I made using my Canon PowerShot SX60 HS so excuse the less than macro perfect quality.
They are actually hanging out close to each other making me feel it could be a male and female so even more incredible that where they hang out happens to have both coloured leaves available to land on within inches of each other.
A side note that I can't resist mentioning is - notice the similarity to the stars and stripes flag on this silver grey butterfly's wings.
Keep enjoying nature - it's a constant wonder and inspiration!
