How Did I Make This Photograph? - Behind the Pixels
How Did I Make This Photograph? - Behind the Pixels
Photoblog by @runrudy
Here is a behind the scenes of how one of my pictures was put together.
Last Saturday morning, my daughter and I worked on this project together.
We went out in our yard looking for bugs. We found a cute little guy as our subject. I am not sure exactly what kind of bug this is. If someone knows, please educate me. : )
Got some flowers and bits from my wife's flower pots. Shhh.
We took it back into my studio.
Here are the elements that we used to create this shot.
- Lady bug buddy
- Part of wife's plants
- Multi-colored sharpies
- Pen holder
- Helping hand
Here is my setup. Sony A7RM2, 90mm macro, White backdrop, strobes consisted of three PCB Einsteins with barndoors. Two of the Einsteins were filtered by DIY purple flash gels.
Had one of the strobes facing the white backdrop to create the purple background.
I placed the colorful sharpies behind my subject to bring in more color to the background.
Here are two images to give you some perspective of how small the bug was.
About the size of a ballpoint pen tip. While shooting you have to keep adjusting as he keeps walking around trying to escape. I use a small piece of plastic to try to corral him to the desired position.
In total, this project took about four hours to complete.
Here is the finished photograph. We thanked the bug for his time and released him back to his home.
Hope you enjoy my photography.
Looking forward to hear from you.

you're welcome, rock on!
all of us just need one break through ...
Definitely, I spoke with him.
I also sent this post to the Curie team earlier today when it was a couple dollars, and it looks like it went through!! :)
Thank you @jamtaylor !
I regularly submit posts for review to the Curie team, and they send them on to 'whales' for voting. Yours is very good, so I had to! I'd love to feature your work in the magazine, as we spoke about earlier today.
@jamtaylor - yes, when I wrote you that comment up there - this was $3.26
getting noticed truly makes wonders
thanks to people like you and tiffjane!
@runrudy I'm happy you finally broke through
keep running, I mean posting!
wow dude, three einsteins to light a ladybug, that is dedication! hahaha. Looks amazing man, great job :)
I know overkill right! ha. Well I did have a 10 degree grid on one of them. Those lights are so versatile being able to bring down to such low levels. I smacked that ladybug with a splash of 2.5 Ws of light.
Interesting work Rudy!
