So you want to photograph Birds in Flight (BIFs)

Okay, whip out the gold card, update the gym membership, and pump some iron. You've just decided on one of the most expensive, physically exhausting subjects in photography.

I suggest if you don't have a few bitcoins to spare you pick up one of the 150-600mm lens from either Sigma or Tamron. The G2 from Tamron runs about $1300 and will get the job done. The Sport from Sigma is pro level and runs about $2000 but weighs in at 7 pounds!

If you have a bad shoulder and need something light I suggest you go with Nikon. They have a 300mm f4 lens you can combine with a 1.4x teleconverter that weighs less than most 24-70 lenses. It uses a special lens element that raises its price to $2000, plus another $500 for the converter.

For bodies you want to look for APS-C bodies with high frame rates and big buffers. The sensor size gives you more reach and the frame rate and buffer allows you to bang out lots of shots to get a good wing position. Canon's 80D and 7D mark II qualify. Nikon's D7200, D7500, and D500 are also good choices. Fujifilm's X-T2 would more than hold it's own. I used the Sony a77 mark II for most of my own BIFs but I have concerns about Sony's dedication to the A mount system.

Here's some of my BIF Photos:

dannnggg man. you know your stuff haha. These shots are absolutely amazing tho.

thanks for the info brother.

Thank you. I had the privilege and luck to study under some great photographers. They deserve the credit. My bird photography skills I learned mostly from Les Ingram. A great photographer out of Perth, Australia.

Woow, the photos are incredible, excellent job! I have many photos of pelicans but none of them is that impressive. Checked your profile and it looks like nature and animals are your popular photo target - same here :) Followed.

Wonderful job! You have some serious skills!

Amazing! Thanks for sharing
