My Tiny Planets #16: Grand Canal Docks, Dublin

As a person working in tech in Dublin, this would be the place to be. It is nicknamed "Silicon Docks" for a good reason; it is a reference to Silicon Valley and Dublin is very eager to claim they have the European Silicon Valley on their hands. But in fairness, in this area many large tech companies are located, like Facebook, Google, Airbnb and Accenture. And it is booming, as you can see by the amount of construction cranes standing there.

At one point in history this location held the world largest docks. There was a lot of dirty industry going on, which made the area very uninteresting for a while. Now that it is clean, many developments are happening. Airbnb stands out, in my opinion, because it kept the original facade of a warehouse and build a brand new multiple story office inside of it. When walking past the building, you will not have a clue of what it will look like on the inside. Check it out if you ever get the chance!

I am standing here at the entrance of the Grand Canal where a sign greets the boats. It is a bit isolated and I discovered the downside of that a few minutes after taking this picture. Apparently a lot of birds nest here and they become pretty aggressive to visitors. I had to run for my life to not get picked by their peckers.

Fun fact 1: If you hang around there often enough, you might notice a lot of U2 activity in this area. Their old studio is located there and they will start building the U2 museum there shortly.
Fun fact 2: In 2015 a prankster altered the text of the sign into "Grand Anal C**ks"
