BUMBLEBEE FOOD SEARCH PHOTOGRAPHY - 18 HOURS WORKER! BAD WEATHER GATHERERS OF POLLEN AND NECTAR

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Dear my Steemit friends,

did you know that bumblebees work harder and longer than honeybees? Below you see a photography from a beautiful garden of my mother-in-law i did with my Sony A6000 and the SEL55210 Zoom objective, one of the low price range with good quality lens. You see the small drops sticking to the coat of the bumblebee? That's the pollen and nectar they wipe off with their hind legs on the way home (which are at the same time the transport containers).

Heroes by Nature

Bumblebees are not squeamish when it comes to low outdoor temperatures. Already at 7° Celsius (44.6 F) they begin to collect pollen and nectar compared to bees who are only just start at 12° Celsius (53.6 F). They are the bad weather heroes who complement the work of the honeybees. Until after 18 hours of hard work they return to their colony, where honeybees finished already 4 hours early. The pollination of our great bumblebees is 2 to 3 times higher than of a honeybee.

BUT to be fair, bumblebees are traveling shorter distances because of their heavy weight while they bearing 20% of their body weight in pollen and even more in nectar on each travel and they also don't like high temperatures in contrast to honeybees. The biggest disadvantage for bumblebees is their small size and number of colonies compared to honeybees. I think eventually they complement each other perfectly to keep the balance in nature!

Yes, not just honeybees do all the work. Bumblebees and local bees help out a lot!

Thank you for additional info!

Great works, I wish you success

Thank you, wish you the same!

Great photo

Thank you also for sharing info about this amazing little worker. We need them so much. I am happy to see the raise of awarness about problems they are facing with the use of pesticides and monocultures. We need them to survive

Do you have any sources how the situation is?

Not current data but i hear alarming messages once in a while on the radio. I live in Europe it is still better here than in USA.
